- Science News (September 4, 1999) -- Dr. Ian Murphy from Toledo, Ohio, a
retired doctor, had a letter to the editor printed. He states that he saw no
type II diabetes in young people in the 60's when he started his practice, but
by 1995, when he retired, it was commonplace. He said he believes MSG to be the
cause. He said that when MSG is fed to baby rats for their first nine days of
life and then discontinued, the MSG destroys the arcuate nucleus of the
pituitary gland. The rats became obese, hypothyroid and lethargic their entire
lives. The control group did not. He warned readers to read labels.
- Reuters and Associated Press -- An article about a glutamate/MS connection
was released and printed in the papers in all major cities in Dec. 1999 and
Jan. 2000. In it, experimental drugs being tested as treatment for strokes were
cited by researchers as having the potential to treat multiple sclerosis. The
drug is a glutamate blocker. The article explains that although glutamate is
vital to the brain function in tiny amounts, it is toxic in large amounts. It
went on to mention studies with mice done at New York's Albert Einstein College
of Medicine and Britain's Eisai London Research Laboratories that suggest that
too much glutamate getting into the brain cells is a culprit in M.S.
We find it ironic that millions are being spent to develop these glutamate
blockers instead of getting glutamate out of our processed food supply. Of
course, the average person reading the article would not realize the glutamate
being discussed is the same substance they are getting daily in their food,
cosmetics, supplements, and medications.
