An acquaintance of mine is Asian and she and her family have a terrible time with MSG. They get specially made Kimchee and avoid soy sauce. They have many food allergies as well. She has explained her concern to me about the obesity plaguing other young adults her age, and how she feels that Asians in general may be downplaying the incidence of autism in their communities as it is a source of shame for many Asian parents. She is very concerned about the health of her peers, and is convinced that MSG is bad for our health. She is extremely bright and is a wonderful person. It really concerns me that adults her age - just barely out of college feel so awful all the time that they can barely make it through the day. This is the time of their lives that they should be looking forward to meeting challenges bravely. Instead they feel hopeless and overwhelmed and don't even know why. Something should be done and soon. We already have Asian children dying of strokes and losing their eyesight too early. Asians are not immune from the effects of MSG. No one is.

Thanks for the post. Does anyone know why there is so little debate about MSG in Asia? Are they all suffering in silence or is there some genetical difference that protects Asians? Or are there something in their diet that protects them? I have heard that Japanese (sea)food is very rich in Taurine?

Zoomer , I suggest that you go to the menu at the left and do a word search under utilities with words such as Chinese obesity, suicide/China, Glaucoma/ China or Chinese, and China/Depression. There have been many posts in the last year concerning headline news about these subjects and how the Chinese are suffering with these conditions in alarming numbers.
One article reported the large number of ill and dying Chinese in a village down river from an MSG producing plant. Considering all the tainted foods and additives from China that have been uncovered recently, we all need to be very vigilant....most of the citric acid, vitamin C, and fillers for medications come from China.
