Drug companies will be funding FDA fast track approval of their drugs. Fees paid will amount to over 1 billion dollars. The bill allowing this was attached to the popular anti-terrorism bill and skated through Congress. The Washington Post article last week said discussion was done behind closed doors, there was no open floor debate in Congress, and pulbic comment was not invited. Post article said this amounts to "the fox watching the hen house" Further the article mentions "safety evaluations" will be conducted "after" the drugs are being used on the public (My ed. comment--which amounts to using the public as test animals for drug trials.)

After-the-fact drug safety testing is a step backward for the FDA.
