A full one page article entitled, "Rivers Run Black and Chinese Die of Cancer" starts on Page 1 of today's Sunday New York Times. On page 1, there is a photo of a 57 year old man who is dying of stomach cancer from drinking water from a local stream polluted by an MSG factory.

Here is the relevant excerpt from the story on http://www.nytimes.com (you have to join to view it):
"One of the biggest polluters is the Lianhua Gourmet Powder Company, China's largest producer of monosodium glutamate, or MSG, the flavor enhancer. But the company's political influence is so vast that environmental regulators who have tried to challenge the company have done so in vain."

Great article, very sad story. I am often confronted by folks who say that MSG hasn't harmed the Chinese so how bad can it be. Well we are finding out, unfortunately. Here is another link to a news story that mentions urban Chinese are lowering their life expectancy. http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=788315AD-8BC6-41D4-A8B85907F08965C2&title=Study%20Shows%20Majority%20of%20Chinese%20Urban%20Dwellers%20Sick&catOID=45C9C786-88AD-11D4-A57200A0CC5EE46C&categoryname=Health%20%26%20Medicine

The article about China, pollution and the nasty MSG factory is available for free in the Seattle Times. Terrifying. Maybe we will be the only ones standing when this is all over.

Let there be no doubt, MSG is "big business".
"Vedan International was up 0.01 hkd or 1.08 pct at 0.94 after it announced that it will establish a joint venture company with Shangdong Xue Hua Bio-chemical Co Ltd to manufacture Glutamic Acid and Monosodium Glutamate in China."
