An interesting topic brought up recently was acid reflux. So many people are suffering from this. Recent research on animals has suggested that some food allergies may be caused by the use of antacids. The explanation appears to be that because the stomach acid is reduced to an ineffective level, normal digestion does not occur. Because the food is not broken down, it may enter the body as a full protein which the body then attacks as an invader. With me so far?
This is just a theory, but here goes: I think that MSG may make food allergies appear indirectly by stimulating the release of histamine (NOT an allergic immune response, but a direct histamine release). Histamine is known to be a factor in increasing reflux. (Histamine relaxes the muscle that keeps stomach contents down where they should stay.) If the overuse of MSG causes an increase in histamine - which predisposes one towards reflux, and the unwitting victim eats antacids like candy (or is told to eat them like candy because the doctor tells them it is good for them), and then eats foods with a compromised acidity in the stomach, they may be setting themselves up for food allergies. Example: me. For years I had stomach pains. I was recently diagnosed with both reflux and Hpylori infection which is the cause of most stomach ulcers. I have to say, I used antacids of all kinds just to stop the pain. I now have many food allergies. Since learning of the latest research regarding food allergies and antacids, I have not used antacids. I will try my damndest to try to avoid using antacids ever again. Perhaps my allergies my go away. I was just infomed by my allergist, that I am no longer allergic to apples. We overuse MSG. We have an epidemic of reflux out there now. And allergies are increasing. Maybe we can turn the tide.

My Husband had really bad acid reflux. He is now MSG free mostly because of my new way of eating. He is off all medications and is digesting food normally. Carol, I think that you're on to something here. Funny thing is I had no acid reflux but I sure am finding myself allergic to not only foods but all my cosmetics and hair products. Hopefully now that you can eat apples (just in time for the season) you can find good organic ones. Good for you to become so aware and take you're health back.

That's an interesting theory Carol! Another thing that I believe predisposes some people to food allergies is genetically modified food and thier derivatives - at least according to Dr Andrea Pustzai's research.
One of the things I've found to help with digestive problems is lactobacillus acidophillus in the liquid form - I used to take it whenever I would have upset stomach, etc.. and it seemed to really help. I haven't really had any problems with it lately.
