I just can't get this right. Last night I ate Trader Joes Salmon, Trader Joes organic frozen peas, Westbrae Natural garbanzo beans (water, organic garbanzo beans, sea salt) and homemade lime butter sauce (fresh garlic, lime, and 365 unsalted butter). Immediately headache, facial pain, funny tongue, nausea/stomach distress, body ache and today I feel like I have a hangover with sore knees, aching shoulders and weakness. I called Trader Joes and they assure me nothing was added to the peas or salmon. No citric acid even on the boat. What product do you think it was. I'm so sick of this...

Stacey, I would first suspect the sulfates and other compounds in the sea salt.

Stacy, wine has sulfites, not sulfates. They are different. Also, there are many compounds in sea salt, not just sulfates.
The next thing I would suspect is the salmon itself, particularly if it was undercooked.

Stacey, Unfortunately, the process of determining the culprit(s) for most of us has been long and arduous. Little by little you will learn by trying the foods you ate last night, one at a time instead of all together, which one (or more) caused the reaction.

Hi everyone,this is Margaret. I was here in April. I have found a Naturapath who is completely on board with everthing that is happening to me. I have had accupuncture three times for the sharp stabbing pains in the right side of my head. They diminish for a short time and come back with a vengeance. The pain in my left foot seems to last longer now. The big toe is painful and I have burning and pins and needles. I have tried ibuprophen with no success.(PM as well as regular)Everything has been done to help my sleep. I still fall asleep between 3 and 6am. I sleep for about 4 to 6 hours and wake up with extreme anxiety. I have no appetite. My food consists of a bowl of oatmeal with organic white sugar,two hard boiled eggs during the day with organic winter squash and grass fed beef for dinner. All attempts at fresh fruit have not gone well. Cucumbers,peppers,carrots,potatoes all seem a problem. I still don't drive most days. The head pain is too intense. On those days the muscle pain is also bad. For over ten years I have taken over the mowing for my husband. It takes about 2-3 days in 4-6 hour periods. I have always loved doing this and looked forward to it. Now I can' get on the mower. I have been an avid reader for over 50 years. I'm no longer able to read. To crawl into bed with a good book was something I did every night of my life. I still come here all day. I was here for 4 hours yesterday. Using the search and trying to understand what I am reading. I don't mind how long it takes. I seem to feel safe when I am here. My stress level and anxiety is like nothing I have ever experienced. The weight is still coming off,but at least slower.Our attempts at organic nutritional support didn't go well. My Doctor is working on this.(I saw her Monday) The allergy tests she did were negative. I sent out a urine test for metals. I had blood work done on Monday. My husband is 100% supportive and in agreement with everything. He will do anything to help me. He's most often the one to go to the small co-op. He started doing this in February when I was unable to drive. We talk every day about what food I have eaten and the severity level of my symptoms. I still need help with shampoo,conditioner and soap. It took me awhile to realize how badly they affected me. I never made the connection between the shower and my reaction. I tried to tell myself that there was no way shampoo or soap could harm me.(all-natural)I've bought three-no luck. It amazes me how long it took me to write this but I did it. I had printed all the posts that you had sent me. I use them as a guide for us and my Doctor. Could you please help me. I feel so desperate. Thank you all so very much,Margaret
PS-Is there a time when people are here that we can go back and forth? When I read 1,3,7 days what time zone is it,or are they from all over?

Sorry Roy, now I understand, LOL. I'm a bit slow sometimes. I tried researching the sea salt but did not find much so need to figure it out some more. The Salmon was not undercooked and I also react to shrimp in the same way but it was homemade shrimp dish, everything from scratch but did use organic chicken broth. That was a while back... In the past I've had the same reaction with wings and ranch dressing I ate at at the tiki bar which helped send on my path to additives. I was in tears on my way home because of the body pain/inflammation and it takes alot to make me cry plus I forgot my pain meds which I tried so hard not to take. I did have a couple of beers but fine till I ate the wings. A few bites of tomato paste will cause the same pain/inflammation. A few months ago I ate steak with no seasoning but did add salt, half a plain sweet potato and plain broccoli/carrots at Outback Steakhouse and my legs swelled up, headache, twitching just after the meal but not extreme sickness. I try to be so careful now and have not had to take percocet in 5 months until the other day. Sorry so long just wish I could pinpoint everything but I know it will take a while. I too am seeing a Naturopath but in WI. Still have problems with MSG, but working on diet too. Very hard - I have alot of health issues. He just gave me some supplements to help with things. Do you have any of any type? I got tired of the regular docs and am trying a different route. From what I read on my supplements, he seems right on the money.

Hi Cheryla1,I tried organic nutritional support. I could not tolerate the taste. Still trying to figure that out. I take flora. I take it out of the capsule and put it in water. Margaret, I don't know what is causing all of your symptoms but it sounds like you may have gout. Gout is a form of arthritis usually occurring in the cooler extremities of the body, like feet or toes. It results from excessive uric acid in the bloodstream which leaves needle-like crystal deposits in the joints causing redness, swelling and extreme pain.
Extra fluid can help flush uric acid crystals out, but alcohol should be avoided. It can be helpful to follow a low purine diet, avoiding foods that are high in purine and eating low purine foods moderately.
High Purine Foods – Avoid Beer, anchovies, organ meat (brains, kidney, liver, sweetbreads), game meats, gravies, yeast, meat extracts, sardines, herring, mackerel, scallops.
Medium Purine Foods – Eat in Moderation
Fresh and saltwater fish, shellfish, eel, meat, poultry, meat soups and broth, asparagus , mushrooms, cauliflower, spinach, legumes, oatmeal, bran, wheat germ, whole-grain breads and cereals, eggs.
There are other foods to avoid as well. You will find many sites if you google "gout" or "gout diets", etc.

I agree, a painful big toe is highly indicative of gout. Although that condition may not explain all of the symptoms and intolerances, it couldn't hurt to try a low purine diet.

I just have a question about a medication my doctor has put me on for migraine headaches. I ordered Deb's book in December and am faithfully avoiding MSG. Of course, I've had a lot of painful "learning experiences." In Feb. of this year after going to a Super Bowl Party and just having a couple of small samples of other food that I didn't bring and getting a bad migraine, I said this is enough and went to the doctor. She loves to prescribe medicine and so she immediatly prescribed Propanolol (generic of Inderol-a medication for high blood pressure used in the treatment of preventing migraines). I must say, that it has helped the severity of reactions to Msg (although I still avoid it religiously, it's just the times when it's sneaked in some foods I have bought or eaten out that I still get reactions). She also tested me(under my insistance) for hormone levels (I'm 54 yrs. old). The hormones all came back practically nil, so I'm also on natural hormones. My husband and I have tied in some of my migraines to hormone fluctuations during most months, now I'm feeling back to my real self again, except for the side effects of the propanolol. They make me weak and tired, and not my chipper self. I tried a month ago to get off the propanolol, but ate some canned peaches in fruit juice and got a migraine. I got so scared of getting migraines again that I went back on the medicine. Now, just today I decided to taper off the medcation again so that I can feel energetic again and lose some of the weight I've gained after being on the medication. I walk daily and am now increasing my distance so as to burn more calories. I also do some light weight bearing exercises. I said all that to say this: Is anyone else on this medication or know of anyone on Propanolol (Inderol)? If most of my migraines are caused by MSG, do I really need to be on the medication if I'm doing all I can to avoid it? Are there any other medications that you or others are using that don't have the weak and tired side effects this medication gives? Just a side note - my husband and I are both sensitive to MSG, he doesn't get as bad of migraines as I do, but he has had migraines, chest pains, neck pain, eye pain, dizziness, numbness in limbs. One time after eating pizza at a Pizza Inn, he just about passed out at Wal-mart 2 hours later- he had heart attack symptoms and also was extrmely light-headed). We both have to avoid MSG and like I said it's definitley been a learning experience. Thanks to this web site and Deb's book we've learned more than we've ever known and are feeling better than we've felt in a very long time.

Kim, if your husband had the meat toppings, especially the pepperoni, I can see why he got sick. As for propranolol, I'm not surprised that it's helping you. Per the link below "It inhibits excitatory glutamate receptors".

do you have the manufacturer of your generic? you can call the pharmacy and find out (I hope) or google the numbers on the pills sometimes
I am having problems with meds that have pregelatinized starch in them -
I was able to look up contents of the generics (and brand name) meds I take here
some of the descriptions you find ingredients near the start - others you have to look for section 11 description

Kim, If you want to eliminate the Rx, there are other things you can take to minimize the effects of FGA or free glutamic acid. Have you tried ibuprofen, taurine, magnesium, etc.?

Thank you for your responses about taking Propanolol. For the last 3 days,I have reduced the dose to 40ml. at night and 20ml during the day (was 40 day at 40 night). That has helped me feel more energy during the day. Di, I am taking magnesium (400mg. at night), and yes ibuprofen does help, and I will have to research about taurine. I'm going to look up the link that MR Piwovar posted. Sara, I'm on the generic of Inderol called Propanolol. I will look up your link also. It definitely is trial and error, I suppose, finding what works best for me. Thank you all for your input!!!

Different manufacturers use different fillers - find the one with the manufacturer of your bottle.
I was switched from one generic of gabapentin to another in late April. I got BP spikes, tremors and more - the whole MSG reaction from it.

I had a bad reaction when I switched to another generic of Gabapentin as well. I'm sorry you have to be on the drug- it was just miserable for me.
There are many options to help treat migraines if diet alone is not helping and you don't want to be on the medication. Acupuncture and physical therapy can be very helpful.
Have you figured out the triggers for your migraines? Sometimes sleep, how frequently you eat and your stress level all contribute along with the role of a healthy diet.
I took Topamax for several months to help with headaches. It doesn't have the same side effects as your current medication but all drugs have side effects. Topamax can cause you to loose weight and have tingling down your arms.
I lost a lot of weight with Topamax to the point of being under 100 LB, was nauseated daily from it, and had daily tingling in my arms and face. But some people don't have any negative side effects.
I recently found out the reason for my migraines were due to not getting enough oxygen while I was asleep, causing a lack of serotonin which would trigger the migraine when I woke up. I just had a deviated septum/sinus surgery this week to correct the problem.
My husband used to get migraines several times a week for years. He hasn't had one in over 3 years by eliminating all MSG and Nutrasweet from his diet (gum was his biggest trigger), eating every 2-3 hours, exercising daily and getting enough sleep.
My brother in law gets migraines that start as tension headaches and progress so physical therapy stretches and acupuncture make a huge difference for him.
Keep looking for options. It would also be helpful to readdress your diet and see if there is anything else you need to eliminate. Good luck!

do you remember which generic it was? my problem was with amneal - the 100 mg capsules were white (aren't they all) with black IP 101 on them. our local pharmacy as well as Walmart in this area carries them (as does Medco by mail).
the problem is pregelatinized starch I think which is also in the generic claritan I got at WM (not all of theirs but the bottle of 60 tablets has it).

I did really well with the 100mg capsules (I removed the powder from the capsule and mixed it into orange juice). It tasted horrible but my body handled it well. I had to build up to 3,300mg a day so I needed to switch to 600mg tablets. Capsules are only made up to 300mg and then switch to 600mg tablets. At this high of a dosage my insurance wouldn't allow me to take (11) pills of 300mg a day, so I switched to the large white chalky pill.
I did fine for the first few months (as far as an msg reaction) but Costco couldn't get the same generic from it's original source and switched to another manufacture. The new manufacture put the white chalky pills into a bubble pack that is clear on top with foil lining the back- which was different from all other Gabapentin generics I took.
I got so sick from those. I don't remember the manufacture now, sorry. As odd as it was the Gabapentin stopped working as soon as I started this new brand. The pharmacy investigated to see if I got the wrong drug, if there were any recalls, etc. But everything on their end was fine.
My next prescription, I switched pharmacies and lucked out with a better generic. Then started the 2 month process to wean off the medication. I haven't been on it since then.
Depending on the dosage you are on, you could talk to your doctor about switching to the white chalky tablet and splitting the pill if needed.
Good luck. Are you doing okay with the side effects? I felt pretty brainless on the medication and that's an understatement.

I am on the capsules - use 100 mg ones - I had used Greenstone generics (am on it now again) but only had used amneal a few days and knew to get off so collected what little I had left of greenstone and worked my way off and got a new Rx that was generic brand specified - my current dosage is between 1 and 2 capsules a day so switching to tablets doesn't make sense and the local pharmacy will order greenstone for me even though they stock amneal
I couldn't handle large doses (not as large as yours even)
I am hoping that once I get this salivary stone problem dealt with by the ENT I can get off of this finally - I suspect a salivary gland problem was missed in the past but this time I have pictures and samples of stones to take in. I am doing what I can diet wise to minimize pain - limit glutamate - lessen oxalate - gabapentin is a glutamate antagonizer

Hello everyone, my name is Kathy and this is my first post. I came across this site approx a month ago and was so excited that finally, maybe I would be able to get help for my beautiful husband Mike (aka William) that has been suffering migraines for 15 years. I just received Deb's book in the mail last weekend! What a godsend she is!
My comment is for Margaret. I have found a web site http://www.fdnow.org that talks about Tyramine in foods and how it affects people with migraines and other ills. The site gives you a list of those foods and for us we have noticed that while for instance Deb A. speaks of using lemons and limes, the Tyramine list suggests using these items sparingly due to conflicting reports that they may contain Tyramine. I'm using this as another tool in unraveling the madness and trust me, at times that is exactly what it is!
Anyway, in spite of a recent setback due to our 32 wedding anniversary dinner at a upscale restaurant on the wharf in Monterrey, CA. and the record temperature heat wave we have had the last few days (over 95 degrees), we have been experiencing periods of the day where Mike's headaches are extremely tolerable whereas before he was suffering pretty much non-stop. This is credited to info from this website and Deb's book. While we still have much work to do, there is a large light at the end of the tunnel!

Welcome to this site Kathy. I'm so glad this information has been helpful and that Mike headaches have been tolerable lately. I can empathize on having constant headaches. I went through two years where I had a constant headache (never a break from the pain and never at a manageable level). I was diagnosed being in a vicious cycle of migraines and headaches and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
My heart goes out to your husband as I understand how encompassing the pain can be. I'm so glad he is getting relief from his diet change.
