sorry if this is a really dumb question, i am new to this whole 'free glutamate' thing (altho plenty experienced at eliminating other problem foods & chems)...
i knew to avoid MSG and anything which "sounds chemically"
but now i am learning that just about EVERYTHING in modern food processing is pretty iffy.
as an extremely busy mom of 2 extremely busy (read "ADHD") boys, i am always on the fly & trying to find acceptable shortcuts in the kitchen- feel like im always in there as it is (;
this school year i have been making lots of good 'healthy' soups- using my trusty Better Than Boullion broth bases. i have finally been able to connect the dots and realize that these boullions are a big problem for us! and here ive been congratulating meself on finding a good msg free soup shortcut...
so what i want- no, i NEED- to know is: is there such a thing as a genuinely MSG FREE Readymade Soup Base/Broth/Boullion???
i just dont have the time or the fridge/freezer space to always make from scratch!

Hi bo'nana. I use Imagine's "No Chicken chicken broth...yes, that's the name of it. Some people do fine with their organic free range or organic chicken broth. But most of the time when I make soups, I just brown a chopped onion, 2 or 3 stalks of chopped celery and maybe a grated carrot well in some oil real well. Then I add my ground beef or turkey and brown some more, then add water and simmer with any other veggies I want in the soup, except tomatoes. Those, I add the last ten minutes, since long cooking of foods rich in natural glutamate in water creates the free form of glutamate, the harmful form found in MSG. In that form, it enters the blood stream immediately. So by doing that, it helps prevent free glutamate overload. Even long simmering of meats or beans in water can do the same thing (hydrolysis in your kitchen). Sometimes I will fry up the hamburger last and add it with the tomatoes if the other veggies are going to take a long time to cook. If making chicken soup, simmer the chicken on low heat until tender enough to remove from the bone. Add to the soup before serving. If making chicken soup with real chicken, there is really no need for added broth. Be sure to saute up some onions and celery first, and throw in some carrots.

i am well acquainted with Imagine foods, so this is welcome info. would you happen to know whether Pacific brand might also be ok? i have a box of that on the shelf right now....
the 2 new jars of Better Than Boullion are going straight back to the ("green") grocery store i just bought them from!
as for the Onion shortcut, yes that is what i used to do, until my dear Bipolar hubby suddenly began having the most amazing MOOD SWINGS to onion in just about any form. it was about 7 or 8 years ago, he walked into the kitchen where i was cooking dinner and suddenly freaked out- threw a fork at my head, then screamed that i was "trying to poison" him!! this is NOT typical behaivior for him at all- only when something has thoroughly triggered his condition does he go into Irrational Overload. We immediately knew the smell of frying onions was somehow responsible.
why then and never before? i have no idea... i wonder tho, reading so much now about AuxiGro, is there any way to find out if it started being used on onion crops that year?
so far he can usually still tolerate small amounts of cooked fresh garlic, shallot, or chives, and the onion that has previously been cooked down extremely well in broth doesnt seem to be a problem- i just cant cook it at home meself!
he is very sensitive to added MSG, like in Chinese Food etc... some restaurants give him an immediate migraine. but he is not careful about what he eats, and often doesnt feel well... then again, i try to be very careful about what i eat, and often dont feel well either...
oh dear. looks like i am going to need to completely relearn how to cook and think about food!
thanks for the lifesaving site here, i may not like the truth very much- but i guess i know it when it is staring me in the face!!

bo'nana, It really is hard to spend so much time in the kitchen, but if you cook a chicken and save the broth for future meals, put the chicken into packets for future lunches or chicken pot pie. I love it when I have veggies on cooking to do both chicken soup and homemade tomato soup for the freezer and chicken to do many future meals as well as a pan with lentils that can have some of the tomato added, veg. added and a handful of pasta to make a hellashiously great soup. I usually make my wheat rolls from Deb's book at the same time and I get a lot of rolls out of it for future lunches, breakfast and snacks. You are having your hands full with the children, but I hope as you do more cooking of real food and find out the things that have sabotaged you, they will improve. One of the big things that I personally needed to do to get rid of the last mystery migraines I was getting was to use baking soda instead of toothpaste, I think Deb uses a commercial one that is safe, check the archives. I also wash any pills that I have to take to get the gelatin coating off of them. I am happy to say that I am at this point beginning to win, big time. sounds like you really have it wired! how long have you been on your program? do you have a set routine you follow? specific meals planned for specific days, and all the cooking at one time and all that? this is something i have always been lousy at-- please share more of your tips and ideas!
as for toothpaste, i also made that switch to baking soda only, earlier this year becoz it had gotten so that ALL brands of toothpaste- even the spendy OG ones- were making my tongue sore & coated, and canker sores, sore gums, etc. no matter how well i rinsed after using.
i have to say i really like using baking soda to brush with, my dental issues cleared right up and my teeth are reallllly clean and whiter than before. (i am a big coffee fan too... i know, i know...)
kids & hubby have resisted making that change tho... maybe down the road...
anyway, i thought maybe it was the ubiquitous Silica/cates/cones/canes that was causing the problem, since i also have morphea (a type of scleroderma). its a connective tissue disorder.
going to keep on avoiding the silicas - pretty sure they are bad medicine (for me at least)
chucked all my hair products too, last Sept... now i wash only with Castille soap and still trying to find the 'right' conditioner (currently using BWC). Hair is growing back in and healthier than in years!
but i do still have a stubborn (psoriasis? eczema? dermatitis?) along the back of my scalp thats been there for more than a year now...
read with much interest people's observations about the hydrolysed proteins in personal care products... then checked my conditioner... yep: "Soy Protein"

Cool name...welcome. I am like Mariann in that I go for the most natural and simplest version of everything that I buy and anything that is possible to make from scratch, I do. My two teenagers and I are allergic to corn and soy so we don't use any of the products that most here are OK with. One thing that helps to ferret out the cause of a problem that is stubbornly hanging around is to get to the most basic diet/personal products possible and then add items back in one at a time.
I also cook in bulk when possible and bought an upright freezer for safe meats and produce. It takes the same amount of time to cook a whole bag of brown rice as it does to cook two servings. In a big roasting pan, it is possible to roast two chickens in the same amount of time that it takes to cook one. Take the time to pull the meat off the bones and put it into the freezer for later meals. Use the bones for making stock. I do beef roasts the same way.....I shred it and put it into the freezer for adding to later meals and use the bones for making stock. I save all onion and garlic skins and carrot peels and celery leftovers in the freezer for flavoring my stocks.

I can now make it without looking at a recipe - same goes for blondies. Most of our meals consist of a meat, some veg, and maybe brown rice or a bread occasionally. I don't make a lot of casseroles but we do eat a lot of soups and stews because they are so easy. I like to keep homemade stock in the freezer all the time. We don't eat a lot of salads, but we do eat a lot of fermented vegetables (naturally pickled like sauerkraut and kimchi) which are very similar to salads or coleslaw but contain natural probiotics.

Kristy I am so glad to see a post from you. I have been concerned, what with the news of the storms in your neck of the woods. I hope all is going well for you and yours. It is funny I was going to ask for your quick bread recipe and here it is. bo'nana, like Kristy I think cooking in bulk is the answer for me. I am not so very organized. It may seem that way, but it is not the truth. I am usually motivated by necessity. I would love to claim that I have it all down pat, but I don't. I have been doing this for almost 3 years, but the most success that I have had is when I started really tuning in to the web site and learning, learning, learning from the knowledgeable people here. Finally last fall as I was getting so discouraged about the "phantom migraines" even when I thought I was being good, I realized that to some degree I was in denial. In my head I heard, well some people have trouble with personal care items, toothpaste, length of cooking, washing coatings off of meds and for some supplements. Certainly that isn't me, I'm not that sensitive. Well turns out I was. I read a post one day that a regular put in, I wish I could remember who. It hit me right up side the head, it listed the journey of health on this eating enlightenment. It listed about "accidentally" finding the site, myself included. I call it God's way of remaining annonymous (not my quote, but I don't know who said it, I just adopted it.) Then working on it, making, mistakes, being in denial, starting over etc. It continued on with being in denial repeated every once in awhile. That was my aha moment. I started posting then, after a couple of years of reading the posts on and off. I fine tuned my methods, got support and I am doing so much better. Get Deb's book, it has great recipes, information right at hand and substitutes for problem ing. It has killer brownnies, cookies, lemon squares. You can bribe a child and a husband with those. Just eat what I give you that is safe, and I will give you treats. I just had surgery recently and the wonderful people here helped with ques. on meds etc. and supported me with their good wishes and prayer. I am eternally grateful and I am doing great now. What usually happens for me is I realize, I need to get going here on some food, and then as long as I am doing it, I do what Kristy does, it takes the same amount of time with one pot on the stove as it does a full stove. I sort of do a competition with myself and make a game of it. I have seen a picture of Kristy's freezer full on this site, it is a site to behold. Keep reading and learning bo' you will be feeling so good, so soon. Read the post by Ali. She is a young Mom and has really helped her 3 children get past some difficult symptoms and behaviors. Ali if you see this tune back in, we have someone here that needs you. bo' I drink coffee also, the one I use safely is Folgers, I blend their decaf and reg. half and half. I use Organic Valley half and half, and sugar. I have lost 44 pounds and counting in the last 3 years, and I eat so much more now. One of the things that tricked me was potatoes. I don't buy any from Idaho. Organic is my choice and I do well with them from Maine and local for me in Rhode Island. Do you have any farms near you. Look carefully, I didn't realize how many I had. I buy organic eggs from the farmer's market and now after a few years, my garden is doing very good. I know it is our first thought to say, "My word that will take a couple of years to do," Yes it will, but in a couple of years you will still be two years older and the health problem will still be yours, but you will see improvement. Hi there. Bo'nana Im Ali a mum of three, and i have had problems with my children and food. If you do a search on my name you can find my original post. I havent had any of my children diagnosed with ADHD or ADD but i really believe without the changes to their diet two at least would have been on that path.As a result of changing our whole families eating habits i have discoverd that i myself am very sensitive to msg. Ive lived with so many niggly health problems that have just melted away. gosh, thank you all for the great words, advice and encouragement right when it is soooooo needed!
as it happens, i just finished having a good cry after yet another failed effort to discuss some of my latest discoveries with my husband... i thought, this time surely he will get on the same page with me, becoz for years he's KNOWN he is sensitive to msg, and here is all this fabulous info from so many people who have allready been helped in the very things he himself suffers: episodic migraines, mood swings, energy fluctuating, insomnia, night waking after 2 hours, chronic muscle, neck, back pain... etc.etc.etc...
yet somehow the whole thing wound up getting turned into another attack on my 'overinvolvement' and 'excessively researching' and how it seems like every 6 months i come up with still another thing to get on a bandwagon about, another light bulb moment' bla bla but nothing ever really changes bla bla bla
and i was taken off guard, so surprised, shocked, disappointed... but realy silly me, becoz we just danced the same little dance we always do
waaahhh! argh argh argh waaaahhhhh
deb, are you the same deb who does this site with her hubby? what an amazing incredible blessing that truly must be!!... what a wonderful gift to have teamwork... never, never take it for granted...

yes, ali, i would love to chat with you more! my older boy is Tourettes/ADHD/OCD/ODD (=pdd/nos). he was always extremely hyperactive, and sleepless as a baby, then following his 2 year immunizations (the last ones he had done!) he developed unmistakable autistic characteristics, which through years of therapy & allergy elimination (lots of foods, chems) have abated to the point that an autism specialist basically told me i didnt know what i was talking about, becoz 'this boy shows no signs of autism' (!) i am both hurt & elated about that 'dx' becoz it shows the very long way my son has come from where he once was...
yet, difficulties continue... the tourettes, spazziness & total lack of impulse control are the worst for him now... and i am convinced from all i have read on this and other sites that MSG is a HUGE part of the problem!
ditto, for my autoimmune problems (also run in my family) and hubbys bipolar (mental runs in his fam), and younhger sons chronic gi troubles and slow growth. heck we ALL have digestive troubles...
i have so much to learn! thank you all for your help! i will continue posting my questions and checking back for your great replies...

Wow you have your work cut out. Thats fantastic news that your son has improved so much on the autistic spectrum. YOu should be so proud of your achievements with him. I only wish others with autistic children or adhd children would realise the fantasic relief they could give their children by dillegent diet control. Both my youngest and eldest didnt sleep as babies....it was exhausting. When my eldest began eating the same food as us, and he just seemed to change before our eyes. my sweet natured little boy could be found head butting walls, screeching, running around in circles for hours and seemed to lose all sense of logic. He was twelve months old. Because the change was so sudden and only began the day he had his first adult biscuit, cake, yoghurt, we were fortunate in realising it was food that caused it. He went straight back on a pureed veg fruit diet and we introduced food item by item and compiled quite a list of nonos....annato, lecithin, blue colouring,msg etc etc....seemed an illogical list at the time but we kept to it and all was well. We could tell just by looking at his face beginning to flush when a mistake had been made. This was in 1998 and we didnt have internet back then. When Isla began displaying the same sleeplessness and general crankiness as a baby i cut out a lot of the things i could remember cai had issues with from my diet and things improved ....i was breastfeeding so she was getting it from my milk. Then when real food began we had terrible behaviour issues with her, possibly worse than her brothers. I then found the list i had had for her brother, googled the list and every single one was a hidden form of msg......bingo....light bulb moment...that was a few months ago now. I cook everything from scratch and she is doing just fine. She has caught up wiht her developement, she almost sleeps through the night and im jsut so thankful to the internet and the wonderful site here. And Debs book is just fantastic.
my husband was happy to see the improvement in the kids but i was cooking seperate dinners for everyone and it was driving me nuts. He refused to participate until i downed tools in the kitchen. It was a case of, here is an msg free dinner, if you dont want it theres the kitchen and you will find the supermarket on the high street....i threw every msg source out of the house!! Now he is none to fond of cooking and certainly not a supermarket shopper. So he shut up and ate up!! And what do you know, he has seen fantastic benefits in his health. He has his mojo back so to speak. ANd now he is 100% behind me and our house is a happier place to be. Everyone of us has seen major improvements in our health. moods have improved greatly and its just a joy to be home now.
Thats the bare bones of my story.

Hang in there. You are doing a fantastic job with the kids and maybe in time your husband will realise. Would he not maybe agree to try it for a few weeks????

bo'nana I am happy that you are smiling again. This is the place to come to get recharged and filled up. The truth is a Mom knows what she knows about her children. Do not doubt your own wisdom. Just take it slow and do as Ali suggested, when someone is feeling better they are more ready to listen. I will say this, when I am having an msg and it's cousins reaction I am not the same person. I get moody and irritated. I am not naturally that way at all. So you are working against a chemically induced mood swing with your husband. We are here for you. I do the same think that you mentioned doing. I got a three ring binder, (now I have 3) and put the printed out posts in there that I wanted. I highlighted and then wrote at the top of the page a basic discription of the subject matter. I put them in in alphabetical order, in other words I would write personal care items, safe vegatables, supplements, veggie ferments, etc. Now I have one with safe foods and where I purchased them (trust me you will forget where you bought things) the last one is recipes. I felt like I was taking control, I felt pro active and that gives you confidence and takes your mind off of the enormity of this problem. It is big, but now unbeatable. Many of us here can attest to that. Keep believing that you will be led to where you need to be and if you ask you will be given answers. "When the student is ready the teacher will appear." Hi Bo'nana and ali,
Your problems with your children's behavior and reactions to food additives is not unusual these days. There is a group of parents on a yahoo group that I belong to with all of the same problems. The group is GAPShelp: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/GAPShelp/messages
GAPS is a diet designed to help cure austism, dyslexia, psychological problems, digestive issues like IBS, etc. The diet is basically a really basic diet that re-introduces foods back in gradually. It starts with meat and vegetables and broth and then adds in eggs, dairy, etc. The foods allowed are designed to be very easy to digest and to heal the gut. Along with the simple, additive-free diet to follow, you learn about adding beneficial things into the diet like probiotic-rich foods like fermented vegetables and dairy yogurt and kefir. Please take a look at the yahoo group to see stories from parents that have cured their kids and questions from parents that are in the process. It is quite an eye-opener.
My two teenagers and I went totally additive-free in Jan. 2009 and we haven't regretted it for a moment. I have found that we can't tolerate any food additives so we have removed them all (not just the MSG ones) and are even learning about the hidden additives in foods. There are many things that are never listed on the label of foods that effect us tremendously (like cornstarch on paper plates or cheesemaking enzymes grown on GMO corn derivatives). You couldn't pay my kids to eat that junk these days because they finally have a taste of what it feels like to be healthy and they know that junk makes them feel horrible. It is one diet that is really easy to follow - if you cheat, you pay.
This forum is so helpful. This is the first place that I found any information that indicated food additives could be our problem. I am forever grateful that this site is here and am always recommending Deb's book. I wish I had enough money to buy everyone in my family a copy for Xmas this year.
I just wanted to note that I was diagnosed (and was being treated for) IBS, fibromyalgia, CFS, and asthma before I removed food additives from my diet. All of those were due to food additives and I was able to stop the meds when I removed the food additives. In fact, I had to stop the meds because they contained the food additives. Before that it had never occurred to me that you could get the ingredients list of Rx drugs, much less read them looking for corn derivatives. We have come such a long way in a year. You will, too.

Hi Kirsty. Thanks for taking the trouble to put all that down for us. I did look at the gapsheild site but found it very hard to navigate. But my head is so much clearer with my improved diet i hopefully will make more sense of it now. I will definately look again at it soon.
We too would like to be completely additive free. I found the last few weeks, the more i have learned the less desire i have to eat anything that contains even a hint of "unreal" food. I do need to find some more recipes though for the kids. They are a bit fed up now with chicken and fish and im still battling with them to get them to eat vegetables. Before i used to hide them in things but the tastes arent so easily hidden without my packets of poison....i cringe when i think of what i fed the children. At least ive realised the error of my ways and while their diet at the moment is a little boring and bland at least they arent being poisoned. Im jsut thankful they love their fruit.
Its interesting that you say you had IBS. I too had bouts of IBS that have completely disappeared. Though are back with a vengance on sunday after i had a fresh bread roll from the bakers section.....Never again!!! Im fortunate in that we have one make of prepackaged bread that for t he moment we have no reaction to.

You could try making beef or chicken broth from the bones to add flavor to your dishes. I like to cook veggies in broth or roast them in the oven with butter and salt. One of our favorites is broccoli, cauliflower, and onions roasted in the oven with butter and red pepper flakes. Almost any veggie tastes better roasted in the oven so that it has a little carmelization. Try butternut squash "fries" cooked in the oven and asparagus is fabulous roasted, too. I have found that even my kids will eat my bread creations or rice over vegetables so kids definitely do much better if they don't have a lot of grains competing with the veg.
The GAPShelp site is a yahoo group so it is kind of like a forum that requires registration, but just much less efficient and harder to navigate than most other forums. I really hate the format, but there is tons of great information there and even lots of meal ideas and recipes.

thanx kristy for the suggestion to try GAPS... like ali, i have looked at their info in the past, but my poor foggy head just cant seem to take it all in... i found it rather daunting...
also, as my older son and hubby (altho he doesnt comply!) have both tested allergic to Casein, and i have SEEN the difference since my boy has been off Cow, i have been hesitant to reintroduce. GAPS seemed heavy on the dairy to me at the time, but i have been reading posts on this board from readers who say that their "dairy allergies" turned out to be actually allergies to the refined dairy proteins, the caseins/caseinates, etc. so i may try it again after all...
for now my 'gut' (har har) says i probly better leave those ideas on hold, focus on exxing each suspect item as symptoms become clear, and progress from there to the real tough elimination program as my family allows- i dont want mutiny!
i've had enough of that in the past!
i am learning SO much about this whole Glutamate Thing! it seems so wierd that so few people know, i didnt know, now i do and so much has suddenly become crystal clear before my eyes... but i know the road to eliminate this stuff is going to be long & arduous, especially as willing cooperation from family members begins to wane...
i have all ready gone through my cupboards and thrown out gobs of stuff, something which just kills my frugal nature... on our very limited budget, food is just not something to take for granted! and none of it was mickey junk anyway, for years i have tried to buy the most wholesome food for my family that i can afford, even after the prices escalated to the point where organic became all but unattainable... plus the past couple years we receive a lot of our groceries as 'gifts', which makes throwing anything away all the trickier!
but i keep reminding meself, it is just like what we allready went through, with Dairy and Soy and every other thing weve pinned as a problem.... this is tought, but it too shall pass and one of these days we should start feeling better again!
did you all know that MSG use has doubled in american food every decade since 1948?? i just read that jaw dropper on a site i found when i googled "glutamate overdose"

Kirsty, in the last few weeks i have become very good at making gravy without the aid of stock cubes. Thats been a challenge but thanks to good old Jamie Oliver i have it nailed. I know from other posts on here that you get to see Jamie in the US. I regularly buy inexpensive chicken wings, break the bones and roast with veggies and herbs to make fabulous stock which i store in the freezer in ice cube trays. Ive a friend that works in the butchers here and she keeps me supplied with bones that would otherwise be discarded to make a beef version the same way. I will try the roasted butternut squash idea. I see those in the supermarket and always wondered what exactly to do with them. They are considered a rather unknown exotic entity hear in Europe!!! Thanks for the tips. All veg ideas the kids will like are greatfully received.
Bonana, I know what you mean about the gaps site. I took a look at it a while back and couldnt make sense of the order of posts or topics...Ill have to have another look when i get enough free time to sit at pc without little people clambering for attention.
I too am living on a very tight budget. Col lost his job 2 years ago the day i found out i was pregnant with our third child...bad timing or what!!!! But then if he had lost it a month earlier we wouldnt have had Isla so maybe it was good timing...depends on your perspective i guess. The downturn here in Ireland is horrific. Over fifty % of the men in our village are unemployed. One thing i have found though is that by not buying anything in a packet on the middle aisles of the supermarket means i spend a lot less and the savings i have made i use to swap all my fresh veggies for organic. In the end i spend the same amount of money. Its rare to see organic meat here in our village so we tend to stick to chicken that is readily available from a local free range farm. I can feed a family of five for two days on one chicken and have soup in the freezer for a couple of lunches. Im frugal by nature but more so these days by necessity....its a bit of a family joke!!!
Hang on in there Bonana and be strong. In just a few weeks the benefits to your own health will become very apparent. I started this for my youngest child and went on to find that i had many small health issues of my own clear up, my middle daughter isnt stroppy by nature as we thought but affected to. These days she is an absolute pleasure to be around. And Cai our eldest has seen great improvements in his "teenage acne".

Wow! I just finished reading this thread from the previous week, and it was just what I needed. This morning, I told my husband that I was feeling a bit frustrated. An acquaintance who never listened to me has now been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Another woman with MS refused the kind offer from a mutual friend of one of my books. My friend called feeling hurt and of course, I tried to encourage her. It was one of those days when I wondered what more we could do to reach more people. But after reading your wonderful, caring posts..most aimed at helping bo'nana..well, you filled my half empty cup...it's really overflowing now. I can see that the word is spreading like wild fire. Our book sales are increasing, and since we don't advertise other than our site, that says something. Thank you, my wonderful "MSG" friends. And, I did hug my hubby for being so supportive, bo'nana. Hugs for all of you, too.

i can totally understand how discouraging it must feel sometimes, especially when it seems like such hard work results in such limited success...
but your efforts have really encouraged this newbie, so please let me offer a little encouragement back to you-
this board alone is an incredible resource to those of us who are seeking answers for our plaguing health and nutritional woes, & i am sure the rest of your website, as well as this fabulous book i keep hearing about are terrific also! (i havent even made it over to the rest of the site yet, as i keep learning so much right here... and i am going to have to order a copy of your book real soon)
i've actually been involved in efforts to lead a 'cleaner-n-greener' life for many years allready, long before i became chronically ill. since nearly all the ladies in my family eventually develop some sort of autoimmune illness, i believed that if i avoided or at least minimized all the environmental toxins, then maybe i could avoid receiving the Family Inheritance (or passing it on to the kids).
as it turned out, no such luck- in part becoz many of the "natural", even "organic" foods and products i turned to are actually nothing more than poisons in clever disguise, marketed specifically to fool those of us who are just savvy enough to really care.
over the past 10 years, my health has really gotten bad, for a number of reasons, some totally outside my ability to control. but i am also learning that a lot of it i have done to myself, for instance all the problems that came from Soy. then of course there were the protein powders too... and some of the supplements...
and ive always distrusted the obvious chemical additives...Rx... pesticides... and of course GMO...
which means, i knew a few things all ready.
so i have strongly suspected for years that there is a Common Link i just keep missing, and that the whole thing is somehow related to Big Food & Pharma, but until getting onto your site this past week, no matter how hard i tried, i could never seem to get it all together...
the moment i started reading all these posts, i started seeing piece after piece fall into place, like in a really difficult jigsaw puzzle when there is One Essential Piece that leads to completing the whole thing! suddenly, so much is finally making SENSE
deb, i want you to know that all your hard work is truly a godsend! please, dont allow yourself to ever become discouraged... if you only reach a handful directly, know that like pebbles thrown into water, so the ripples shall spread!

Ali, Stick with those local free range chickens, I guarantee they are better quality than the organic chicken in our supermarkets. I wish I could find some that weren't fed corn or washed in corn during processing. I dream of roasted chicken and chicken liver pate. Butternut squash is so great because it will keep beautifully for a very long time at room temperature so it doesn't take up any space in your fridge. You can cook a butternut squash easily by cutting it in half and scraping out the seeds. Prick it through the skin a few time and place it cut side down in the oven until it is tender (30-45 min?). Scoop it out and mix with butter and a little brown sugar and cinnamon or just butter and salt. You can even roast the seeds to eat like pumpkin seeds. Very economical veg. - butternut squash made with homemade chicken stock is the best ever!
bo'nana, I agree totally about all of it coming together after reading this site. I had tried various diets to regain my health with the basic erroneous thinking that if I lost weight, my overall health would improve. I finally realized that I needed to focus on getting healthy and then my body would naturally shed the excess weight. Instead of a fad diet, I needed to change the way I thought of all the food that I put into my body. This site put me on the road to health.
Deb, we are all so grateful for what you do. Just remember that you need to plant the seed - you may not be around when it starts to grow, but it will. I sometimes feel that it doesn't do any good to talk about food additives and then someone will respond to one of my comments on a blog and I can see that it made someone want to know more. For all those people that refuse to listen, there are at least 10 more that are hearing something is that going to change their life from one of us on this board that you started. Remember the ripples!

I use a brand of broth called Kitchen Basics. I've tried plenty and been fooled by organics and claims of no msg. But on their carton it says not only is no MSG added but they neither autolyze nor hydrolyze and they test for MSG. I've been using it successfully for years. It was quite a relief to me to finally find one that wasn't trying to trick me and kill me.

Where are you able to find Kitchen Basics, Zaren. I use Pacific brand No chicken-Chicken broth. I have to order it by the box through Fred Meyer's. They discount full carton purchases.
