I'm about 3 chapters into my excitotoxins book, and based on what I've read so far, and some comments here on the board, it sounds like I may well want to increase magnesium but not calcium, especially if I'm having low grade glutamic acid reactions.
If true, then the tri-salts wouldn't be a good solution.
Has anyone found or used a powdered magnesium supplement?
I know they mag magnesium chloride solution ("oil") which is applied topically.
I wonder if that's a good direction?
However, I don't think I want to add one more ritual to my life right now.

In reading through the archives, and reading that several people who are sensitive did well with the Magnesium Orotate from beyond a century, I decided to order that.
I spoke to the woman there and she was nice enough to get my order out today (2:15pm eastern), so I should see it Tuesday.
While I was ordering, I decided to order the taurine though I didn't do any reading on it yet (it was only $7), and my flat rate shipping was $5 for the order.

Glad to hear you found a magnesium. I take the Tri-salts just for the calcium but the magnesium is a bonus for me. It does sound like the straight magnesium will be a better option for you. I apologize I didn't think of that earlier, let's blame it on the concussion.

I thought of you this morning as I was emptying the dish washer in bare feet, especially as I emptied the forks & knives.
A woman down the hall dropped a knife which landed in her foot. She was bleeding badly, which she tried to stop with a towel. Eventually, she lost a lot of blood and she had to be taken by ambulance. (sorry for the graphic story). Not something that was ever on my radar.

Citrate= citric acid
Just like glutamate= glutamic acid
Anything with "ate" at the end means that it's bound to something else.

Oooh, let us know how you do with the mag orotate.
The really important ones to avoid, according to my doc, are the oxides. Don't know why!
The whole "citrate = citric acid" thing is exactly why I tried switching my son to the mag taurate...but we keep coming back to the mag citrate despite the citric acid connection. He just feels better on it.
Mike, there are tons of powdered drink magnesiums out there and it's a much better way to get lots of magnesium (if you go for bowel tolerance as our doc suggested). But, they usually have a bunch of stuff in them. My son doesn't like them because they can be a tad bit gritty (even the good ones - the poor ones are horrid)...but it takes a lot to get to bowel tolerance I think.

The max oxides are the hardest to digest, and indeed the "hardest" on your tummy.
It was the first type I tried last year, and it really hurt my tummy (though there may have been many other things going on at the time, so maybe if I had it now, it might not be as bad).
The chelated magnesium as very easy on the tummy, though recent reading from an MSG perspective suggests that maybe that's not the best choice.
I'm so not looking forward to the powder I ordered from the beyond folks, but I think I'll try it in applesauce, and see how it goes.

I use Magnesium Chloride (MgCl) which is a magnesium based salt. It tastes bad but works excellent (It can be sprayed on the skin and absorbed through the skin). If you buy purified powder it will last for a long time and be very economical. Ancient Minerals is available in the US (never tried it myself).

You are right to avoid calcium initially but over time when your system is more saturated with magnesium you should add it back. I use MgCl with 250 mg calcium added at night and it is an excellent sleeping aid.
Typo above: I use MgCl but not the brand Ancient Mineral.

Which brand of MgCl do you use? Have you tried spraying it on the skin? If yes, is it irritating?
