My son has been eating these for a while without an issue, but had one last night and seemed to have a mild reaction today. Darn!! I guess it's too good to be true - maybe something in the cheese?? Am I missing something else?

Organic low fat milk could have milk solids in it, that is a problem and Annatto definitely is a problem. Keep at it though, you will win Mariann

I have had that brand, and did eventually end up reacting to it. I suppose I could tolerate a little if I've been clean with my diet and would have it as a rare treat. I know for a fact I'd have to space it out - like once a week at most.

Can you guys comment more on Annatto? I *thought* it was a problem, but then I've not seen it on any lists and a google search didn't mention anything about it having glutamates. So I thought I was confusing it with something else.

Hi. I have something to contribute to this topic.
Before i found out i was sensitive; before i knew msg was in everything...
Before i lived with one constant sinus pressure headache...
I had found that i had much more athletic stamina, and would get out of breath less when running if i ate meals high in vegetables, and light on meat, (or free from meat, provided the protein and fiber were adequate) light on or free from grease, with no few (or no) preservatives or chemicals. ( this opposed to if i ate things that would be listed as part of the SAD ( the Standard American Diett))
I also had fibromyalgia and believed that avoiding the preservatives and unhealthy chemicals was important for keeping it in " remission" so to speak.
The Amy's frozen meals were a good resource for me for this style of food. I was training with a group for a 5k, and so would eat them right before training. On days i ate them, i had a good run. But, if i ate delivery pizza, for instance, i would feel lousy, out of breath and slow that day. So, i believe they are fairly healthy, in general. (or at least have been).
They were always a great convenience food for me too.
They have this wonderful (though slightly high fat) meal called Amy's bowls broccoli and cheddar bake. ( similar to a macaroni and cheese with broccoli, but with ingredients that vary slightly from the meal listed in the post above.)
Its a bowl full of spiral pasta, with broccoli florettes, in a creamy macaroni and cheese type sauce. ( with crunchy crumbled topping) I loved it. Every now and then, something cheesy just hit the spot, and this was the best, most delicious macaroni and cheese type meal i had ever had in my life.
Ive been able to continue eating some of the Amy's meals since discovering i had become sensitive to msg... I had a freezer full of them. I have been a little scared to try some of them, since there some msg names on the box of some of them. ( and i found i will react to any that contain yeast extract...and some ( a few) do).
( i will always react to yeast extract even in an Amy's meal)
But, ive found that some of these meals that list other msg names, only, have turned out to be all right for me. I figured that it's their processing methods.. They must just be better than average... A cut above, i thought. Everything in these meals is organic. ( Or, at least everything HAS been organic...I've thought)
A couple days ago i ate the broccoli cheddar bake. It tasted great, but i seemed to have a reaction to it. However, I also had had a reaction to something i ate at breakfast, that day, and also at lunch and breakfast the previous day( Meals not going well this week, clearly) so maybe i am loaded up on msg and more sensitive than normal).
This Amy's also had Annatto.
There are some Sargento cheeses i eat. All goes well if i eat one that does not contain annatto ( ...and has no natural smoke flavor, which i have refused to touch.) But whenever i eat one of their cheeses containing too much annatto, i react.
I saw anatto on a list... Maybe you guys have added it since this post. I read somewhere ( here?) that it comes from a bean, but the process of extracting the annatto from the bean creates processed free glutamic acid, sadly.
Annatto is the so called healthier substitute for fd&c yellow dyes, added to so many foods now, in the name of choosing a good and healthy natural alternative to food colorings.
( a note about the Sargento cheeses... I do eat their white sliced cheeses that list annatto, but now ONLY after cutting off the outer edges, which have been stained orange by the stuff. ( why they want to color the edge of their munster cheese orange is beyond me!))
I am concerned that Amy's is changing... Beginning to cut corners and mass produce...and so include more processed free glutamic acid in the process. Maybe we should write the company asking them to reverse course ( in a kind way).
They have been comming out with new meals recently... And i read online that they have opened a drive through restaurant recently... I think in california somewhere. Very concerned about the restaurant industry influencing them, and about their direction as a whole.
i am seeing things in their ingredients i dont remember seeing before also, even though ive only been eating the " same " meals I always have, rather than trying new ones.
I am seeing corn starch, for intance...never remember seeing that before. I am seeing soy lecithin now too. The lables of Amy's are starting to resemble a typical (mostly organic) lable, not the lable of the virtuous company i had come to admire for their principles.
After breakfast i hope to come back and list the ingredients in the broccoli cheddar bake... And maybe compare it to an older box of the stuff. ( for the last several years ive been saving empty boxes from packaged meals and foods i like, because its so hard to find healthy meals... i wanted to remember the good ones, not read every lable in the store before i choose which food to purchase. This was before i found out that msg was hidden in everything. I am thinking the ingredients on the two Amy's broccoli cheddar bake boxes will be different...but we will see.

Ok, after breakfast turned into the next day. Sorry. However, not sure anyone noticed. Semi old post i responded to. But i want the information to be there for anyone who comes across this post. I found the board myself, through an archive...
Here is the ingredients off the box i just recently ate, and think i reacted to:
Organic rice pasta( organic rice flour, organic potato starch, organic rice starch, organic soy flour), organic lowfat milk, organic broccoli, cheddar cheese( pasturized milk, culture, salt, enzymes[without animal enzymes or rennet), grade AA butter( cream, salt), organic sweet rice flour, organic rice flour, filtered water, organic sunflwer seed meal, sea salt , organic tapioc starch , organic potatoes, organic extra virgin olive oil, oranic agave nectar,expeller pressed high oleic safflower and/ or sunflower oil, organic annatto, yeast, soy lecithin.
Besides annatto, there is soy lecithin, and... I am wondering also why they put yeast. I dont remember it from before, and it seems an odd ingredient for pasta, if you ask me.
Also, is rice starch, potato starch, and soy flour ok? Im a bit new still, and i wasnt sure about those, and would like to know, because i saw some of those last in some of the other meals in the freezer that i have't tried.
( my mom went and purchased a number of these for a surprise. She didnt realize that i dont have any easy time trying new things any more)

The one thing that caught my attention is the "yeast", which is curiously not labeled "organic" like most of the items listed. That makes me wonder if it is short for "autolyzed yeast extract", the source of free glutamate favored for almost but not 100% organic foods.
