What's the best type?
I was using Bluebonnet Chelated Magnesium, but was thinking of buying Cardiovascular Research Ltd.'s Magnesium Taurate (because it sounds like taurine which I think is supposed to be good, though I didn't research that yet).

I use Tri-Salts from www.needs.com along with several other people on this board. It contains calcium, magnesium and potassium.

I'm not a big fan of powders, and was hoping for something in a vCap (no gelatin). I did pick up the magnesium taurate today at lunch.
I keep making the same mistake over an over again: changing more than one variable at a time. I decided to add greek yogurt, dole frozen blueberry, and stop all supplements. My neck is very stiff and painful (could be a total coincidence, or a reaction to the yogurt or lack of magnesium and minerals. One day I will learn and be more patient.

The reason so many of us have chosen the Tri-salts is because there are zero fillers or binders and most of us react to vcaps.
I hope the magnesium taurate works well for you. Try to be patient and only introduce one thing at a time. I know its frustrating to have to wait.

My son has been taking Magnesium Citrate (currently Nutricology brand) and does very well on it. We tried the Mag Tuarate, thinking the Taurine (which he also takes) would be a nice bonus. However, within about 4 days of the Mag Taurate he was horribly fatigued. I, on the other hand, am taking it with no issues at all, but I don't react to glutamates. On the third hand, he has fatigue issues already/independently so it might not be glutamate related, but watch for reactions.
Emily - I was under the impression from our doctor (who is very up to date on the glutamate issue) that additional calcium is a no-no for those sensitive to glutamates?

I think you son is very lucky to have a mom who has dug into this in such detail, and is helping tweak and monitor things so carefully.
What really makes me sad is all the people out there who are having problems with MSG or other food sensitivities, and never figure it out.
I have to resist my temptation to become an anti-MSG evangelist (makes me sound like a crazy nut case).

You are correct about the calcium. My daughter has a contact allergy to dairy so she is 100% dairy free and my husband and I eat very few dairy products because of her allergy. Because of this I do run low on calcium and need to take a supplement. While I was nursing her, I was 100% dairy free as well and took the calcium supplement twice a day. Now I take it 3 times a week to supplement.
I believe Deb A does best when she doesn't eat a lot of dairy products so she takes a calcium supplement every few days.
So I believe those that take a calcium supplement are ones that must limit their dairy intake and are concerned about getting the minimum daily amount needed.
That's great you have a doctor that is so aware of the glutamate issue.

I'm on the verge of accepting the advice I've been receiving about the vCaps.
I did take a look at the trisalts.
How do you take it? (mixed with applesauce?) Does it taste terrible?
I notice that:
Calcium (Carbonate) 450 mg
Magnesium (Carbonate) 250 mg
Potassium (Bicarbonate) 99 mg
it's mag carb (which I understood to be the least absorbed type).
Do you feel it's working for you?

For the Tri-salts, I just mix it in 2 TBSP of water and swallow it quickly followed by more water. Yes, it tastes terrible but I've had worse.
It has worked very well for me. I'm extremely sensitive to any medications and supplements and only take them if I feel they are my ONLY option. I took the Tri-Salts twice a day for a year while my diet was 100% dairy free. For the past year I have taken them twice a week or so (no set schedule) or if my fingernails start to feel weak (a sign to me I'm not getting enough calcium).

I've read that it's good to add a bit of lemon juice to powdered cal / mag to make it slightly more acidic and improve absorption.
Although, I'm sure lemons don't compare to stomach level ph.
