Nova and Frontline (PBS)will present a 2 hr documentary on genetically engineered foods titled "Harvest of Fear" tonight (Tues, 4/24/01) 9 - 11pm in NY/NJ -- check local PBS listings elsewhere. Includes interviews with scientists, farmers, biotech industry reps, government regulators, and "anti-GM" activists. Regarding bioengineered foods. I was quite dismayed in my wheat-free quest to find that a common food additive - xanthan gum is in everything. Xanthan gum is actually made from microorganisms and in factories owned by companies like Monsanto. I am trying to find guar gum to use instead which is made from a plant seed.
Regarding the PBS show - get online right afterwards and tell PBS your thoughts on the show. The discussion board was especially lively after the Trade Secrets show.

It is quite incredible what has been kept from us on this topic and I thought I really was up-to-date -- now, I more clearly understand Carol's concerns about Monsanto. If you missed the program, at least check out the web site and cast your vote.

You can go to the PBS website and vote on GM foods--for or against. You will have to vote 6 or 7 times before your vote is added to the tally:

Yesterday it was running against, but overnight it has flopped over to faver GM foods, so please vote. And don't be swayed by the slick "for" arguments that they make you read before each time you vote!

Actually, THIS is where you start with the voting on GM foods:

(The above-linked page is after you've voted several times and are given a final chance to change your mind.)
