OK I just had a scary experience while shopping with my hubby. One minute Im walking round the shops the next I am horribly dizzy and wobbly on my legs, very dry mouth and slight heart racing as well as pain in my right shoulder blade. I think Im about to either faint or at worst die, right in the supermarket, on top of that Im yawning a lot and feel exhausted.I also have some feeling like trembling in the muscles in my legs. I have a glass of water offered by a pharmacist who also takes my blood pressure (its normal)then go home to bed and sleep. I wake with a throat which is tight and swollen. I ring a dear friend of mine and she says "are you allergic to MSG?" remember we ate chinese take out food for lunch ...mmmm so now I am wondering did I have a panic attack or am I allergic to MSG? The lunch was about 3 hours ago. For years I have suffered what I thought was I.B.S (embarrassingly having to run from some restaurants in the past cos of chronic diahrrea and hot flushes!)and even at home can suddenly suffer bouts of this for a couple of days if I eat too much of the same thing...so PLEASE is this MSG reaction or is it a panic disorder/ anxiety attack and how do I tell since the symptoms are so similar and I have been under some huge stress in the past year.? I would appreciate ANY advice. Thanks and Godbless, by the way I live in Australia and not much is said about MSG here.I am more than happy to be contacted at markrehua1@bigpond.com

Janette, all those symptoms - including the I.B.S. are typical symptoms of MSG reactions. The part of the brain targeted by MSG - the hypothalamus - is responsible for that "fight or flight" reflex. So panic and anxiety are also part of the whole "MSG experience".

Janette, you brought back horrible memories for me. I remember all too well the terrible colitis, hot flashes, anxiety, dizziness, and that awful feeling in my throat. You can read my story at our site and compare notes. Take care, and don't be surprised if your doctors are clueless about MSG... just a warning. We aren't allergic to MSG. Excess glutamate causes a toxic reation...it's our body's response to a toxin or drug. Take care and keep us posted. :-)

I have been fighting headaches, heavy head, and vertigo so severe that I loose sight for the last two years. I had a bout with this 11 years ago and then gradually got better. I have seen so many Doctors I don't know what to do. I have noticed head conjestion and the vertigo makes it impossible for me to walk in the dark at all.I can't drive for fear the spinning attacks can happen with no warning. I have gotten to the point that I am getting used to feeling this way and am unable to live my life the way I used to.I have had all tests and no answers. I have taken Meclizine,Antivert, Valium, Xxanax, Steriods, etc. Anyone out there that has had these symptoms? They now say it is Meniers Desease although no hearing loss-I seem to hear everything and it seems that any noise is ear shattering and any vibrating noise makes me sick. Thanks for listening, I don't know what to do. Susan

Susan,
There was a man named Robert Cupp who used to post here. I don't know if he still frequents this site. Anyway, he had what the doctors thought was Meniers disease. He was about to under go an experimental brain surgery to help stop the dizziness. The surgery may or may have not worked and he would probably have to relearn some motor skills. I believe it was his mother-in-law who discovered that MSG may be the problem. He tried the avoidance of MSG and it worked!! As I recall, his doctor got very angry and told him that if he did not have the surgery that he would not see him anymore. He did not have the surgery and I believe he is doing fine now. He is among many who have reported vertigo as a symptom of MSG poisoning. You may want to search this message board for "vertigo", etc. I tried to find the posting about his story, but could not locate it. I did come across a couple of postings I have copied below. One is from Deb and the other is from Robert Cupp. I also believe his story is in the "MSG Myth" book, written by Deb. Also, many of us, including myself has had heart problems/chest pains resulting from MSG ingestion. Hope this helps!! Take Care!!

Me Morris, thanks for posting your similar symptoms. I remember doing some research for the sulfite chapter in our book, and learning that tinnitus is one listed reaction. Again, I believe that this ringing is symptomatic of first, MSG and other excitatory neurotransmitters like aspartame and cysteine, and secondly, by the huge amount of other chemicals in our foods, hidden or otherwise. I know that when one man, Robert Cupp, who is also mentioned in our book, eliminated MSG, his so-called Meniere's disease, which consists of inner ear and balance problems, was cured. He said he was so dizzy, he couldn't move some days. He was scheduled for surgery that would sever a nerve leading to the brain that could result in his needing to relearn certain motor skills. Even his doctor didn't believe him and insisted he still have the surgery. I know he is still doing well, since he posted on the NoMSG site last year to that effect.

MY RINGING IN THE LEFT EAR COMES & GOES. WHEN I DO EAT SOME FORM OF MSG THE RINGING STARTS, THE BACK OF MY NECK GETS STIFF, TOP OF MY HEAD HAS ALOT OF PRESSURE THEN THE SPINNING (DIZZINESS) STARTS. THE WHOLE TIME I HAVE RINGING STUFFINESS IN MY LEFT EAR. SOMETIMES IT IS SO BAD I CAN'T HEAR OUT OF IT. WHEN I HAVEN'T HAD ANY MSG I FEEL GREAT! I SEE A DR ONCE A YEAR FOR A CHECKUP. HE FEELS A SHUNT IN MY EAR MIGHT HELP THE RINGING, I DOUBT IT WOULD. HE STILL THINKS I HAVE MENIERE'S DISEASE. BUT HE CAN'T EXPLAIN WHY IT COMES & GOES. I EAT AT THE OLIVE GARDEN ALOT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO IT MADE ME VERY SICK, HEADACHE, SPINNING FOR 4 DAYS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I ATE THAT MADE ME THIS SICK. I'M FINE TODAY.

Thank Ya'll so much. Sometimes with all the Doctors each telling you something differant, you begin to second guess who to believe. The last Doctor set up an appointment with a Meniers specialist in Memphis and they concured that surgery is the next step. I cancelled the appointment because they seem too unsure. It seems too risky! You both have such exact symptoms as I seem to that I am definely going to follow up as you both advised. It helps to hear someone describe the same feelings that you wake up facing most days. It is hard to explain to someone that hasn't experienced it. I will keep you posted on what I find out and I will read the book-try the diet and see what happens, Wish me luck! Greatfully, Susan

Susan,

I had vertigo and still do on occassion. I also have ringing in my right ear only. My vertigo required me to put my car in park at stop signs because I could not figure out if I was moving or not. On occassion I have had in the past felt the floor moving, looking at the road it would often come towards me in waves.

There is a story in the book In bad taste: The MSG COmplex about an allergist who had to stop driving because of the vertigo. He is better now.

I don't know if it will solve all your problems but follow deb's elimination diet. I did and while not all my problems are gone, I don't put my car in park at stop signs anymore!!!!!

Keep us posted. I am new here too and there is a lot of very, very, very helpful information if you do a search on any topic. This board has allowed me to learn from others and shave two or three years off my learning.

I am amazed at the coincidence here. I just posted to John in Australia and included the story about Robert Cupp in an attempt to demonstrate the severity of the MSG problem. I hadn't read Susan's story. So Susan, my post to John may be of some help to you, hopefully. I had vertigo and still get it if I ingest MSG by mistake. My ears ring terribly if I eat it, too. Colette, we are so happy to have you here...you are quick to support newcomers and share your experiences and new found knowledge. I'm sure you are helping so many others. Thanks to all of you are regularly check in here looking for ways to help fellow sufferers.

I am trying to find out if I am also allergic to MSG. After I eat at certain restaurants, I will start to get dizzy, feel that my brain is incapable of thinking like there is some kind of strange pressure on it, and usually knock out on the bed for a couple of hours. After I wake up, I feel disoriented and sometimes really thirsty. It has been happening all of the time now. I ordered some mequite turkey from the deli and had the worst reaction. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks for reading!

Anonymous,

What you describe sounds like a common MSG reaction. Please avoid MSG, and to do so you will probably have to start out avoiding eating anything you can't read the label for. If you ask at a deli they can often show you the label. At a restaurant that's not so easy.

Hi Roy,

Thanks for your advice! I have been reading certain websites to find out how to read labels and am in the process of learning what foods I can eat. I don't have much time to cook, so
I have relied on tv dinners a lot, but realize now that I had negative reactions to those too. These msg websites are great though and I'm grateful to know that I'm not the only one even though everyone around me seems to tolerate msg rather well.

Thanks again!

Sunny

You can try the sample diet at our site at www.msgmyth.com to test yourself to see if you are reacting to MSG. You should start to feel better right away. BTW, I would bet that most of your friends and family are reacting to MSG, but are calling it acid reflux, headaches, depression, anxiety, etc.
