My mom had a bad reaction to a salad from "The Outback Steakhouse" a couple of days ago. She had just recently read an article in our newspaper by a doctor who regularly has a column. It was all about how restaurants spray salads and salad bars with MSG.

My mom is very sensitive to MSG and glutens and while she doesn't know about the "hidden" forms of MSG, they are so closely related to glutens that she's been avoiding them simply because she's avoiding the glutens. I'm working on educating her. ;) Anyway, a couple of nights ago she ate at the Outback, off of their gluten free menu. She KNEW she was getting NO gluten, but she had an attack within just a few hours. The ONLY thing she had besides her gluten free meal was the salad. So she knew it had to be that. I suggested that she call them and ask, but she decided to just wait until they eat there again and then ask before she orders it.

So, just as a word of warning -- beware of salads and salad bars and be sure and ask if they are sprayed.

MSG is almost always added to salad dressings, and it's in the croûtons. I had never heard of it being sprayed on salads.

My son also had a problem recently (a seizure) from eating the salad bar at Ruby Tuesdays. Although the manager denied that they sprayed anything on the salad I tracked down the distributer who admitted (off the record) that the vegetables in salad bars are routinely sprayed to keep them fresh. How else does the food look so good after sitting out all day?

If they are still spraying with a sulfite solution, they can be in violation of a federal law that has banned that practice after people died from ingesting treated foods at salad bars. See if you can find out from the distributor exactly what they are spraying on their salads to keep them fresh...sulfites are preservatives...MSG is a flavor enhancer.
