I can't believe that you are describing one of the most embarrassing reactions that I had to MSG. My son also had the same thing happen to him. When I got MSG out of my diet, they disappeared. I have had no reoccurrence of them to date. I remember that someone else discussed the same thing here years ago. Try brushing your teeth with baking soda and avoid MSG in all its forms. |

I don't know if this is related but http://olympics.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=healthNews&storyID=7581641 If researchers can link periodontal troubles to cardiovascular disease, this may not sound so weird. Perhaps this is another case of two symptoms, with one being mistaken for the cause of the other. |

Hey All! I had that same symptom back when I was a teen. The doctor said that it was chronic tonsilitis and I had my tonsils removed when I was 18. This is my first post. I was suspect that MSG was the cause of my medical problems. And so I searched for "MSG free" and found this site and the Truth in Labeling site. I was having problems keeping MSG completely out of my diet. So I ordered two books. My check hadn't cleared as of today, so I was in the middle of writing an e-mail to Deb when the postman came in with my books! Yeeaahh!! I marked all but two of the symptoms on the front of the book. Is that amazing or what. I have been on the "Test Yourself" diet from the web site for two days and I am feeling a little better. Well, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the books and the web site!! Pam |

Pam, we wish you all the best as you work at reclaming your health. Please read the first 80 pages of our book at least a couple times..there's a lot of information to absorb, but it will make your life easier. And be sure to read the page marked "Attention hypersensitive individuals!" and the substitutes section before you try the recipes. Most of us don't want to think of ourselves as hypersensitive, but most of us start out that way. Considering all the symtoms you have, please do all you need to avoid MSG. It does get easier. I had most of those symptoms, too. All I get now is an occasional headache and they are not bad....maybe once a month or less. So glad you found us. We're here to help. |

i've been experiencing this as well. in my research, i've found that happens to a lot of people who have allergies, or chronic tonsilitis. often known as tonsiloliths...and it's much more common than you'd think. |

I had the same problem with my tonsils and they said it was tonsilitis. I had it since I was 13 and my mother refused to have them removed. The last year, I had it 18 times and I was tested for allergies and nothing showed. I ended up getting my tonsils taken out at the age of 21. Just make sure that if you keep getting those white spots, craters on the tonsils (where the white spots like to form) that you get checked. I never had any other symptoms, fever, chills, etc. I just had soreness, swelling, craters and white spots. --- Brushing your teeth with Baking soda does help and also gargle with salt water, helps kill the bacteria!! Best of Luck!! |

This is the strangest thing ever - the first time I've ever been to this site, and there are several perfect word-for-word descriptions of what I have been suffering from for too many years to remember. I was tired of trying to pick those stupid little white things out of the back of my throat (and setting off the whole gag reflex thing - YUK), decided to check out chronic tonsilitis on the 'net, and here you guys are - describing what I have, too! So here's the question - what is the best solution to this probelm? Is the best way to get rid of this permanently to have a tonsilectomy? Or by trying a more homeopathic approach? What kinds of foods all contain MSG? I don't eat Chinese (well, maybe three times a year, but that's about it), and I don't use MSG in my cooking (if I would cook that is), so how do I avoid MSG? Please advise. |

Go to our site at www.msgmyth.com and read all the aliases for food additives that contain free glutamate, the harmful component of MSG. www.msgtruth.org and www.truthinlabeling.org have a lot of great info, too. There's a helpful book for the person new to this at the first site, also. People think that by avoiding Chinese food that they don't get a lot of MSG, but it is hiding in most bottled, bagged, frozen, and canned goods. The best way to avoid its hidden forms is to eat fresh, whole foods. Not easy at first, but the only way to regain health. |

Besides MSG is there any other food that needs to be eliminated? How do you guys actually pick out those tonsil stones? I cant even get them out but instead got my tonsils bleeding trying to pick at those stones? |

Aspartame,L-Cysteine, MSG, and other aliases for MSG or glutamate containing additives have to be eliminated. Check our site and the list there and in our book at www.msgmyth.com. Start brushing your teeth with baking soda, also. You can gargle with a mixture of baking soda and water (1 t. to a cup) or you can gargle with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water...same measure. |

I had chronic tonsillitis too; I was sick every other week and my one tonsil is a lot bigger than the other. I use coconut oil for this (It's anti-viral among other things) and I have not been sick one time since I started using it. (my tonsil is still large but it doesn’t bother me) I read that a lot of people have lingering viruses and they don't know it - I think this is true and it may be one of the causes of a reoccurring tonsillitis. My one friend's son had Torettes syndrome and they treated him for over 10 years, to no avail. It went away completely after he had his tonsils taken out. I read that the measles virus tends to hide in the tonsils and 'may be' one cause of this disease (and many others) and that people with Torettes are sometimes cured by having the tonsils removed. At least it worked for him. |

The white things in your tonsils are called tonsil stones. To get more info about them, go to www.TheraBreath.com. DO NOT get your tonsils taken out. They are there for a reason. |

Omg, i can't beleive how many of us out there suffer from this. Basically we are all suffering from tonsil stones, little white, foul smelling gross things that build up in the back of our throats (in our tonsil crypts) and give us dog-breath. It does appear to come from a hole in the back of your throat. The problem is connected to our nose as well as our throat. My doctor also told me it was food build up, i had one lab analysed and they gave me 3months of a solid course of penicillin. Did nothing. I'm now trying out nasal-sinus drops to fight the disgusting things, also AktivOxigen tablets which are supposed to have immediate effect!! I'm only 17 yrs old and i truely sympathise with anyone out there who has this problem, it makes you paranoid ashamed and generally causes problems if you have a bf/gf or just out socialising! All i can personally reccommend is that u DO check out www.therabreath.com bcuz it rlly enlightens you on what you have. Especially if like mine, your doctor hasn't a clue! And i've found regular brushing, mouthwashing and gargling helps keep the smell at bay and can make them come up less frequently, tho it doesn't get rid of the problem. Goodluck 2 evry1 experiencing these tonsil stones, if ne1 does manage to get rid of them, plz tell us all how u did it!! Sam M |

I always feel the metalic taste of my throat,my mouth very dry and its no improvement even I drink a lot of water daily. did u guys also feel the same thing? my doctor told me it was food build up, and he said this is nothing to do with taking antibiotic. The most important is gargling after each meal. How u see? |

Mouth washes are full of excitotoxins, chemicals artifical sweeteners. Try brushing your teeth with baking powder. Even most toothpastes contain glutamate and sometimes asparate. Only when I avoided MSG and aspartame and toothpaste did the white spots and drymouth disappear. |

I had my tonsils removed when I was like 23, trying to remember exactly how old I was. I kept getting strep throat and getting really sick. Getting them removed really helped me. But everyone is different. Just had some other surgery on my throat for another reason.Surgery on your throat is pretty rough on you though. Check out all your options. I had a very good ENT doctor both times. Actually my doctor this time is the associate of the doctor I had last time. I am recovering pretty well, but I am having quite a lot of pain, expected that. But overall doing better so far then what I thought I would. |

Connie, I hope you are much better now. Recuperation can take weeks for some surgeries. Teresa, I use baking soda for brushing all the time, and my dentist says my teeth are great. Someone posted that baking soda can scratch teeth, but I use so little on a wet toothbrush, that it is almost totally dissolved before it reaches my teeth. Ask your doctor for more information about your health and having a baby. |

Deb A, thanks for your advise. currently,I'm taking chinese medicine, feeling better, and having improvement of my tonsil. On the other hand, I use baking soda to gargle every morning and night. The white things dropped themself, some of them have no longer appear. Anyway, the holes they left still there, maybe need to take sometime to cover. I think gargle after every meal is one of the better way too, its look better that keep the tonsils clean all the time. |

I was ADD and ADHD as a child. I ate very poor! I consumed enormous amount of junk food and candy! I had tonsilitis constantly. Even becoming ammuned to tetracyciln from having to take so much. My diet I thought had improved but, I have had toncil stones on and off ever sense. I was told by a doctor once, the toncils are the only gland in the body that have the ability to help fight off cancer. They act like a filter system to help rid your body of toxins (in layman terms) I have not had a bout of these discusting little morcels until last week. Coincidentily my daughter has been on a 3 week migraine caused from I believe from too much MSG in our diet. So in conclusion: I have a theory. I believe they come from MSG. When we reach a certain toxic level our toncils get over loaded and begin to purge them. I have noticed a familier nasty after flavor from certain foods that tastes almost the same. It would be interesting to scientifically test them! I bet they would contain toxic levels of glutemic acid. Anyone else know anything about toncils filtering? |

Anonymous, I think you can try with salt solution (baking soda + salt water), gargle after each meal, then you will find the improvement. Continue this formula a few months, to see the result before you going to remove your tonsil. Beside, drink more water. |

Elise, I'm convinced that MSG caused my tonsil stones. After my tonsils were removed, I would still get some in the back of my throat on the sides. Once I avoided MSG, they no longer formed. |

Found your site today. I have had two really bad cases of sore throat with the white tonsil stones in the last three months. While both cases may have been strep I didn't have either tested. My tonsils become so swollen I can not swallow. While I don't remember what I had eaten before the first case, I do know I had eaten chinese food on three different occassions in three weeks before the last case. I also had been given a piece of diet candy brought back from Turkey the day before i got sick this last time, and after I ate it got a really bad headache. I have been fighting this last cast with my tonsils since last Wednesday, it is now Sunday. I am presently living in Saudi Arabia, so going to a doctor here is out of the question. I had strep a lot when I was young and figure when I get sore throats like the ones I just had it is strep. These last two times have been very painful. Being in Saudi makes it difficult to get natural foods. In the little town I am in, getting a lot of stuff is hard and I don't think asking about MSG would mean anything to them. So my question is...what basic things can I do to help with this problem while I am here. I will probably be here only another couple of months and back to the states. I will try the baking soda (if i can find some here) for brushing my teeth and will do the gargle also. Please let me know if you have any other tips that might would help me get back to feeling better. I know a lot of my other problems I am having may also be related to MSG and I will definitely order your book when returning to the states. Thanks for your help. |

What real fresh foods can you buy in Saudi Arabia to prepare to eat? I am talking about food that is not in a can, box or package and not smoked or preserved in some way. When I get a sore throat, frequent gargling with warm water and salt really seems to help; however, I really needed a doctor when I had strep. |

I had the same white stinky things come from my tonsils. it is caused from chronic tosnillitis and sinus infections/drips. i use to get them out by using a q tip. they make your breath stink and once u get them out your sore throat is relieved. i had my tonsils removed. my husband and a friend both have the same problems and both have chronic sinus infections. those white hard stinky things are actually pus. another method of getting them out is to strain your throat like if your trying to gag, often they will pop out. you can also try coughing really hard or my way using a q tip. i could not stand the way my breath would smell with those pus pockets uuugh thank God i got my tonsils out. i have been to several ENT MD's and i am RN i have never used MSG so i doubt that is the cause. also if u have allergies u are more prone to getting them usually from the nasal drip. now there is a difference between these white hard pockets and the white pus patches that are associated with strep or other throat infections. these hard pus pellets are not necessarily a reason to have tonsils removed . i had tonsillitis 8 times in a yr that is why i had the surgery at 19. and have great breath since |

Anonymous, Per the link below, a metallic taste in the mouth can have many causes, from bleeding gums, sinuses or nose, medications such as thyroid medicine, penicillin, and lithium, food allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, high protein diets. Also mentioned were chemotherapy, radiation therapy, cancer, B 12 deficiency, zinc deficiency, Bell's palsy, strep throat and Sjogren's disease, along with anything that causes dry mouth. http://www.atlantadentist.com/metallic_taste_in_mouth.html |

I started getting these when I was a young teenager and I'm now 27. I've come to the conclusion that when I increase my carb intake the worse the stones are. I love breads so I'm not giving them up I'd rather give up my tonsils than carbs. I've never spoke to a Dr about this but I am tired of poking & gagging myself. Normally I don't notice the stones but lately they have been messing with the taste of my food and it's disgusting. I'm done with the stones! |

The white spots referred to in the above posts are white chunks that are embedded in pits in the tonsils. They can come out of your mouth. They are not like the blister spots that you get when you have strep. Were you positively diagnosed with a throat culture? The headaches are probably from the meds. I would consult my DR. |

I suffered with those ugly stones ALL my life... from childhood until 40 years old! Every doctor said not to taken them out... "they will protect you, your body needs them..."etc, etc... I was sick and tired of having bath breath, always sleepy, tired, and pocking on them every day... One day I told my doc either he takes them out or I was going to find some one else to do it... Do you have pits that the white spots are inside of, or are they blister type white spots, or are they just a white film? The white film indicates Yeast (Candisis) and will also be on your tongue. The pits are bad (decaying) tonsils. The blisters indicate Strep or some other infection. I would go see a doctor! |

Jay, This is exactly what we are all talking about. My tonsils had pits in them and the white chunks would come out of the pits. They are decayed pieces of tonsil. I had chrinic tonsilitis and had mine removed when I was 17. No more problem. But today doctors have realized that we need our tonsils and they should only be removed if absolutely needed. |

Years ago this old lady told me never to have your tonsils taken out because they are one of the bodies disease fighters and protectors. She said everyone she knew that had their tonsils taken out got cancer or some other disease. In explaining to me she said those white things are the bad things the tonsils collect so as to prevent them going into the body. She was very adament about not taking them out. If she is right than it sounds like everyone that gets these should be glad their tonsils are doing their job. Its probably best to just keep cleaning them out regularly yourself. |

I am so glad that I found this site! I am 34 years old and I just started getting those nasty things (tonsil stones- I guess they're called)about 3 years ago. I have read every single post on this site and it has helped a lot!! It's good to know that I am not alone in this, although at the same time I don't really wish this on any of you because I know how much it sucks! I get so frustrated as I lock myself in the bathroom and stand in front of a mirror with a Q-tip trying to dislodge these nasty things all the while trying not to gag myself to death and being careful not to accidentally swallow one of them when I do finally get them dislodged. It's so time consuming and irritating because I'm so prone to gag when anything comes near my tonsils anyway. I can't stand having them in my tonsils; I can feel them in there and it bothers my breathing, plus I know it has to be making my breath detestable because they stink so bad!!! To go through all of the work that it takes to get rid of them only to have them show back up a few days later is almost unbearable. I really appreciate all of the posts on this site and I will be checking the links out to get as much info as possible. I will not consider taking out my tonsils but the baking soda & salt water gargle sounds like a good place to start. I really like the idea of using the blunt tipped syringe with baking soda and water to remove them too, maybe this will help with all of the gagging. I'm most interested in finding a way to prevent them from coming back. It sounds like MSG might be the culprit but then again maybe not. My eating patterns really haven't changed over the course of my lifetime really. It's odd that I only started having this problem 3 years ago. Unless companies just started using a lot more MSG about three years ago- in that case it would make sense. Nevertheless, at this point I'm willing to try anything that has worked for anyone else. Thanks again! This site has helped me to regain some sanity. |

I had my tonsils out 57 years ago and other than some aches and pains I'm healthy (no cancer or other diseases). I had heard that the white areas on tonsils were pus from infection, and if you have a chronic case you might want to check with a doctor. Perhaps what you need is a little help getting rid of them for good, whether it be with medication or surgery. Sometimes a good doctor is necessary. |

I wonder if what you describe Stacy could be a sign of candida or a yeast overgrowth caused by an active fungus in your system. I was treated for that and my tongue and throat were often white and coated and tonsils too. I studied up on candida due to a lot of posting on this board and am much better now and can eat more things too. I am the one who drinks kefir everyday and that is a very helpful probiotic drink. |

Hi, I'm really hoping something can help me out, basically I presume I get tonsil stones but I'm not sure if they actually are tonsil stones... Last march (2006) I had one bout of tonisillits which cleared up and I haven't had any related chills/fever anything since. However, since that 1st attack I do frequently get what looks like pus pocketed in the side of the tonsil. The thing is though, it doesn't look like a sesame seed (as i've heard stones look like) and doesn't feel particularly 'solid'. -More just like a lump of congealed white-ish pus. I do 'feel' it however as something stuck in the back of my throat. I have been to a private ENT specialist (when at the time didn't have any 'pus'.. typical) but he assured me that the tonsils didn't need to come out, and that they looked quite healthy. I said I had pus on them sometimes and he presumed they were tonsil stones. Once when I did have the pus, I went to the GP and a swab of it confirmed it was NOT strep, however, they didn't say if it was 'stones' or not (they aren't too informed on all things ENT!) I do actually manage the pus quite well... I gargle with Betadine mouthwash (iodine solution) every day, and when I do get pus, it normally falls out within a day if I gargle more frequently. Anyway, my main question is... do u think they are actually tonsil stones? They certainly don't resemble 'stones', more just like congealed pus lumps as I said. I do worry alot about my health and I get scared every time I see it, even though I don't feel any other symptoms (illness). Please, if someone could help me I'd be grateful!!!! |

Had those all the time until I avoided MSG. That's all I can offer. |

My daughter had the white pus pockets off and on for years, but the doctors didn't want to remove the tonsils. Eventually she stopped getting them without doing anything. I don't remember the doctors ever referring to them as stones, just pus (indicating some type of infection). She has quite large tonsils, but no further consequence. |

Hey Deb and Diane, Thanks SO much for your replies (this is 'anonymous' by the way, who posted about the pus!!). You have made me feel alot more relaxed. I contemplated ringing my ENT man about it, but I don't feel the need now, so thank you. Diane, yes my tonsils are also still abit enlarged but the ENT doctor also said that this was nothing to worry about and that tonsils can range enourmously in appearance! But that it is completely normal. I guess what I worry about is that they are somehow harmful, or the start of some kind of illness..... But as I said, I worry alot, and I just try to reasure myself that they are hopefully harmless... did you find they were harmless? thanks alot xx |

Claire, Yes, they were harmless. During the years that my daughter was having a lot of bouts with tonsilitis, she was also experiencing a lot of sore throats and colds, so some of the infection (viral or bacterial) was settling in her tonsils...but that didn't cause any harm. Sometimes she needed an antibiotic (if the infection was bacterial) to clear up the tonsils, but mostly the pus spots just came and went. But, it's good to have a doctor check it out now and then. |

I had tonsilloliths from the age of 12. I always had a sore throat and I would choke on those awful stones in my sleep sometimes. At 20 years old, I went to 3 different general practitioner doctors and I was referred to two different ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialists. I fought a year to get my tonsils taken out, because those disgusting little cottage-cheese looking stones were destroying my sleep, my health and my breath! After 2 years of demands, I found a surgeon who would perform a tonsillectomy. It was the most painful surgery with a long healing process but it was the most worthwile thing I have ever done! I recommend it t anybody. These things only get worse. I used to pick out the stones with tweezers and the holes ("crypts") kept getting larger and food would get caught in the empty spaces. It was the worst time. Tell your doctor that you choke on them when they dislodge in your sleep. Then they'll take you seriously. Good luck! |

I used to get those too - what finally stopped them was eliminating sulfites. Nearly all of my congestion improved, which in turn stopped the tonsilliths. This was before I knew all about MSG. I'm glad the surgery was successful for you, otherwise it would have been very frustrating. I find it ironic that 50 or so years ago it was practically routine to have tonsils removed. Jennifer |

Laycee, the gum and cough drop may be adding to the problem. Most contain corn syrup and dextrose, which contain glutamate residues (glutamate is the harmful part of MSG). And some contain aspartame, which is as bad as MSG. I had the same condition for years. Even after having my tonsils out, the white stones would form in my throat, which was constantly sore and hoarse. When I avoided MSG, ALL those problems disappeared. I have heard from several singers who were losing their voices until they changed their diets after finding our information here. |

I've read that those white stones are caused by sinus drainage and/or congestion. Try using a neti pot with distilled water and a pinch of salt to clean out the sinuses daily. You can also use a water pik with a sinus attachment. |

I caught tonsillitis while on vacation last May. I was prescribed antibiotics for bacterial infection, but as soon as I finished the 10 day course, 3-4 days went by and I relapsed (fever, chills, throat etc.) This cycle repeated itself ALL summer. Finally after 5 rounds of antibiotics, the sixth treatment was a strong one (clindamycin) for a month which finally knocked the infection. Ever since my tonsils have had the stones and like everyone else, I push them out with the end of my toothbrush, only to discover them again the next day. Sometimes so many come out I am astounded at the volume! I have a very healthy diet but I am considering going off yogurt since it is a cultured product and may have msg and I guess the calcium could be a problem too. 2 Questions: What about gargling with acidophillis? Could chocolate be a problem? I have a bit of an organic dark chocolate habit... Cheers to all of you for your discussion and suggestions. |

I don't have much to add considering I've never had this problem. They say mold thrives on chocolate. And you've had a lot of antibiotics to lower your good bacteria. |

It may be a good idea to start taking a good probiotic pill...if in gelcap, remove and mix with water and drink. Or you can drink some kefir, which has many good strains of bacteria. It may be that you are still eating too much free glutamate that is so well hidden in foods today. All I know is that I used to have the same annoying white spots that disappeared once I avoided MSG and its cousins, and used baking soda for toothpaste. Let us know how you do. |

I've had the stones....tonsiliths or something like that. I found out about sulfites before MSG, and removing them from my diet helped a lot. I would only rarely get them. Then I removed the MSG, and they pretty much stopped. But whenever I'm sick, I get a sinus drip that can make them reoccur. I use a "Neilmed" sinus wash, and maybe that would help you too. I did determine that it was the sinus drip that was the cause of the white spots. So....not only food, but allergies or smoking could also cause that. (I quit smoking for the third time in 2005. BUT, when I removed the MSG, I no longer had the "urge" due to stress, and can safely say I'm "cured" now. I haven't seen that phenomenon posted, but it's another reason to quit MSG). I use baking soda for toothpaste too. As for chocolate....if you're intolerant of caffeine, and sulfites, you may have a problem with chocolate. I can safely eat one square per day...so I use the 100% stuff with no sugar - it sure packs a wallop. One square of that and I'm good for three days! Jennifer |

Both of my daughters and I get these nasty white things. I just sent this link to them with the heading "We are not alone". My doctor told me it was putrid matter. I never dreamed of getting my tonsils removed though. I don't have any sickness with them. They are just smelly, disgusting annoyances. Good to know my tonsils are eliminating the poison from my body. I have most of the symptoms on the MSG check list and some listed in the posts that were not on the list. I started the Test Yourself diet last Thursday and ordered the book on Sunday. I feel a bit better each day. Losing the tonsil stones would be a nice side effect of no MSG. Thank you very much for your website and discussion board. I keep returning to it for support. |

Be sure to read the chapter about sulfites, Miss Kitty. Many of us who are MSG intolerant also react to sulfites. We're so happy to know that this site is so helpful to so many fellow MSG victims. |
