After coming across a link to this site while searching for "sugar" and headache symptoms, I got really curious and read alot of the posts here. Not that headaches are my biggest problems but I am running out of possible links. Let see if I canput this in a nutshell: When I was pregnant (15 years ago) I noticed an increased (if not new) sensitivity to certain foods. I noticed mostly processed meats. All that went away after I gave birth and then came back with my second prenancy. Symptoms included chest pressure, severe headaches (I call them my toxic headaches)palpitations, increased BP, and various digestive problems. After my second prenancy it didn't go away, though. I have tried various food eliminations and I honestly never thought it was MSG because I could eat ...say...flavored chips and have no reaction. I could not figure it out for anything. I went for a whole year of being so nauseated I couldn't eat hardly anything. Various gastro tests and cardiac tests showed absoltuely nothing wrong. As the years are passing, I am now finding that different foods are bothering me. I can eat a hotdog with no problem but cant eat a cookie without waking with a horrible headache. Sometimes I get sudden severe nausea and very sleepy like I need to just lay down. I get weak and short of breath, like I cant stand up without bracing myself. My heart races and skips beats. My symptoms sometimes take a couple of days "to build up". I am still not sure that it has to do with glutamate as I will explain: A Few years ago I went on the Atkins diet and felt great! But that only cut out carbs (sugars and starches and so on) I actually ate alot of processed foods and cheeses with no problem. I asked my doc about carb metabolizing and she had no explanation. So I went off the diet just thinking it was my imagination. All symptoms came back...hmmmmm, I thought gluten? Tried that...nope, as soon as I ate sugar I felt horrible. I can eat corn without a problem, I dont know...it just seems to boil down to sugars, although I can have artificial sweeteners and haven't had a problem, I drank a lot of diet drinks on the Atkins. Anyways, the reason I am asking is because of a post that said something about cane sugar and glutamate and a sensitivity to that, but wouldn't all products then bother me, or does sugar have a higher level? Just fishing for answers here, hope you can help.

I am wanting to add now, that after reading more posts, I am understanding a little more about this. I understand that there is beet sugar and cane sugar...and regardless of that, it could be the malt flavoring or carmel coloring or any gamet of ingredients included in store bought food. Now the question is, how do I know if cane sugar is pure cane sugar, or if the flour I buy is safe. I tried reading labels in my pantry and I am more confused now. How do you get your teens to eat well. My daughter suffers from many of the same symtoms. Help please

Cane sugar is produced by C&H and Dominoes. Look at the label on flour. Whole wheat flour does not contain malted barely flour, but most white flours do. Just read and you will find a white flour that is made just from wheat. Hodgson's Mills flour is just that. Teens are a challenge... peers and their social life are the big deal. Don't lecture. Just make healthy snacks..there's a fast and easy recipe for Magic Cake in the book that people love..you mix everything in one bowl. Make extra snacks and cookies and keep plenty on hand in the freezer. Plain potato chips and dip made with Daisy whole milk sour cream and onion powder, salt and pepper and cayenne is good. Better yet, chop up a bunch of green onions and roast in the oven until light brown and crunchy, and add that instead of onion powder. There's a whole chapter on packing lunches. I always make extra dinner and send that as lunch for my husband. It's what I eat, too. Give yourself and your family the time it takes to adjust to a new lifestyle change. Your daughter, once she feels the difference, will begin to choose for herself, healthy alternatives.

Deb, have you had success with Arrowhead Mills flour? That is the only all purpose flour I found here that doesn't have malted barley.
I also wrote to King Arthur Flour about the fact I can't buy their all-purpose flour. We'll see what happens.

Carol, I haven't tied the Arrowhead Mills flour, mainly because I haven't found it here in town. Is is organic? Let us know what King Arthur Flour has to say.
