Quote: "Sodium Benzoate is an artificial preservative that causes cancer cells to form" - posted by Cornuts Nov. 11, 2007 in this thread.
I just did a little research on Sodium Benzoate as it is in an Aloe & Herb stomach tonic I just bought - Aloe Life Stomach Plus Formula. I only had 1/2 ounce of the product two days in a row and developed heart palpitations and a few other mild msg symptoms. Nothing else in the product was suspect other than potassium sorbate which I haven't yet researched.
I wanted to refine the above quoted statement...
Sodium Benzoate by itself is not a carcinogen. It becomes such if added with anything citrus apparently which turns the chemical to Benzene. However, this is not to say Sodium Benzoate by itself is not a problem for msg sensitives - it may depend on the source. Most is chemically derived, but sometimes it is naturally occuring in some foods or spices such as apples, plums, cranberries or cloves and cinnamon adn a company may use it from those sources. But still if there is any type of citrus also in the product, it will turn to Benzene.
Here is the article I got this info from - not sure of the scientific legitimacy of the source.

When I see any bensoates or benszenes on lables, I avoid the product. Thanks for the article quote. There are so many toxic brews in our foods and cosmetics.

would egg white protein powder - containing just egg white powder by NOW foods be safe? I am supposed to eat protein for breakfast according to my naturopath and am having a hard time with that. I'm finding I don't really care for eggs and can't do soy. So I thought I would try Deb's smoothie recipe using the egg white protein powder.

If the eggs are not organic,
You have to read the ingredient list also to see what other things are included,
Most packaged foods contain chemical ingredients that are not healthy,
protein powders are notorious for hazy ingredients,
they are there to keep the powder stable.

bobby, Thanks, that is a great interview. I had read this before (it's from 2006) but it was really good to refresh my memory. I will forward it to several people that I think could benefit from it.
