If I'm out, and need to eat at a fast food joint, what's the safest picks?
I read McDonalds fries are bad due to seasoning, but what about burger king & wendy's fries?
If I order plain beef patties and fries and just use salt or mustard, would that be ok?
Yes: I know KFC is totally out, but if you've discovered any emergency eating out tips, I'd love to hear about them

If it was an emergency and I had zero other options, this is what I would pick. I wouldn't call any of these options safe but I think they are the least offensive (I used to be able to eat these options 5 years ago when I was very sensitive but not as sensitive as I am now):
Bean burrito at Taco Bell with no red sauce.
Papa John's garlic cheese pizza or a regular cheese pizza with very little to no tomato sauce
Arby's Turkey sandwich with no mayo and no mustard. The turkey is safe but the bread has malted barely in it.
Wendy's french fries or plain baked potato
Fresh salsa and tortilla chips from a Mexican restaurant
Banana or uncut fruit from a gas station
Plain Ruffles potato chips sold at sandwich shops

I have had great luck eating a hamburger from Wendy's and McDonald's. Just specify "no seasonings, no salt, no pepper". You have to say no salt, because their people don't always understand "no seasonings".

I can eat the bun and a tiny bit of ketchup and onion without any problem, but I wouldn't try this if I were experiencing any symptoms beforehand. Also, I'm not as sensitive as others. We just met some friends at a regular restaurant last weekend and the only safe-looking thing on the menu was a hamburger, so while everyone else ordered a dinner I had the burger - and did fine.

I asked a restaurant owner if she used MSG on her hamburgers and she said no, they save that for their steaks.

This reminds me of one thing I learned the hard way. Keep safe salt in your car. I am allergic to corn so the only ones on Emily's list that work for me are baked potato or uncut fruit (thanks - I never thought of either). I have found that some of the fast food places get their patties already seasoned, but I don't think Burger King does. If you are corn allergic or super sensitive just remember that the cooks may think they are OK if they don't add salt when cooking, but it could still have bad stuff in it.

I can't tolerate Burger King hamburgers. I don't know if it's something on the grill or in the meat.

My son loves hamburgers and we have found that most sit-down restaurants *do* add a seasoning mix to the burgers.
Our favorite is Chipotle. Everything is safe for him (even the steak seasonings) except the tortillas, which have aluminum, and I recently found that aluminum increases the glutamate reaction somehow.

You can buy baking powder and baking soda advertized as aluminum free at the Whole Foods grocery for your home cooking. Do the other ones have aluminum in them? Does salt?

Yes, the brand is "featherweight" and it contains: monocalcium phosphate, potato starch, potassium bicarbonate.

Some baking powders have aluminum....I'm not sure why they use baking powder instead of just baking soda in tortillas, though. I've never used anything more than baking soda in mine.

Is there an acid in your tortilla recipe, Kristy? Baking soda needs it to cause the leavening effect. Just curious what you use.

The one thing that is safe that you can get at almost any sit-down restaurant is an egg poached in water, nothing added.
