Re: New article on Fibromyalgia in the New Yorker Magazine Nov 13 issue. I was amazed at just how much some symptoms of contributors to this board match the complaints listed for Fibromyalgia. Two doctors listed in this article sympathetic to patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia are:
Dr. Robert Bennett,
Chairman of the Division of Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases
Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon
Dr. Bennett is quoted "I believe the answer is that you suffer from a disorder of sensory processing, so there is amplification of sensory nerve impulses-increased input from muscles, bowel, bladder, and the organs of taste and smell." Remind you of anything? Notice the reference to taste and smell... Another sympathetic doctor is mentioned too whose wife has fibromyalgia:

Perhaps those of you who have found relief from fibromyalgia by avoiding MSG could write a letter to the New Yorker or to one of these doctors. It appears that most doctors right now are still at a total loss how to help people who have this disease, even when they actually believe the patient.

This is great, Carol. Just a few days ago, I received the medical reports (actual medical records and their doctor's comments) and testimonials of four former FMS patients who are symptom free with the elimination of excitotoxins. MeMorrisNJ, I just visited the LEAP site and found it fascinating. If you read one of my earlier postings, I said that it was my opinion after looking at all the information I have gleaned over the years, that MSG and other excitotoxins, and dangerous food additives like sulfites and phosphates, haved "messed up" our immune responses. Remember that excitotoxins play havoc with important centers of the brain that control every vital function of the body. When we have been subjected to dangerous toxins for so many years, I believe our immune system has been forced to work on overdrive and can no longer differentiate between a safe substance and dangerous one....thus our immune system is so compromised that we are constantly getting ill, not only from the resulting weakness of our immune system, but we are suffering the damage left by the powerful chemicals that are released by our immune system to fight disease and other substances recognized as invaders. (such as histamine and the t cells that were mentioned on this site) It was great to feel somewhat validated in what I have been suspecting, if this doctor is correct and I believe he is. I think the rise in food allergy reactions and asthma and auto-immune diseases were first precipitated by the dangerous additives and chemicals in our food. And look at all the chemicals in our environment that have done their part as well. Now that's an issue our next president should tackle and soon! Perhaps what this doctor says would better explain why some of us react to foods that contain natural glutamate now when before we did not. Our body has become so sensitive to glutamate molecules in any form. Any more ideas?

I go to the Hackensack University Medical Center. They have a great staff in the Center for Allergy. My allergist is Dr. Selvaggi. The staff allergy nutritionist (Susan Krauss?) is excellent. The nurses are the best trained anywhere. The doctors are not only concerned about food allergy but also about chemical and environmental sensitivities too. Thanks to them, I discovered a lot of what was making me miserable. I still avoid MSG but yesterday I was diagnosed with allergies to chicken and celery in addition to milk, soy, tomatoes, carrots, apples. I now have even more answers, it explained quite a lot.

I have just recently found out about the effects of MSG and other excitotoxins and I am looking for a doctor in the Bucks County, PA or Philadelphia, PA area who has a thorough understanding of excitotoxin damage and has worked to help others suffering from long term effects of this neuropoison syndrome. At age 47 and suffering a good many of the symtems attributed to MSG toxitity for at least 21 years, I feel like I'm at the end of my rope. This is very hard to admit to anyone, because I have always been a bright type-A driven person. I currently own my own business, but feel like my health can't take even one more dip before I go down for the count. Last week I finished reading Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills
and have since changed my eating habits to organic home prepared foods. This has helped some as I am able to think and remember things more clearly and my energy has come up some as well. Today, I have ordered Debby's cook book.
Please, if any of you who have been through this can give me any advice, hope, or help, it would be so very appreciated.

Hello Mary and welcome. Glad to hear you are feeling better, and hope your health improves even more, which I'm sure it will. Remember that even organic fruits and vegetables have different amounts of natural glutamates to cause you problems, and even more glutamate is freed up when you cook them. It will probably be a long process finding out just which foods you can and can't tolerate, but the excitement of feeling good spurs you on, as do the wonderful people on this discussion board. I'm looking forward to the day when I can start adding safe foods back into my diet, but so far, after almost two years, I am still eliminating them. I feel so much better now, and I know the slip-ups I have will only be temporary set-backs. Once you find all of the hidden sources of glutamates, and if you still have a problem, as I did, you might have to eliminate sulfites and tyramine in foods, as well. Let us all know how you are doing.

I, too, recently discovered MSG & company as contributing to my health problems. Diet is certainly a big part of controlling our health, but I also wanted to try to search out a doctor familiar with excitotoxins. Most people who have one allergy, have multiple ones in reality.
In the Baltimore area, I was able to find naturopathic doctors, who understand some of the problems, but since we can't take supplements, and that's what they use, I think they're ability to help is somewhat limited. However, the ND I went to was able to determine what minerals my body was very low on (calcium, magnesium, etc.) and that I needed to take thyroid medication (my basal body temperature was about 95.5 degrees. She was also able to refer me to an MD in Annapolis who prescribed the Rx from a compounding pharmacy. That allows me to take my meds out of the gel cap, which I react to.
You can find info on naturopathic drs and compounding pharmacies with an Internet search engine, or there may already be a link posted within one of the messages.
I've found once you find a compounding pharmacy or holistic doctor, you'll find it easier to network and find someone in your area with some knowledge of our problems ('thorough understanding' might be wishful thinking)
I personally use accupuncture as well, not as a cure, since its more useful for preventative medicine, but to help me deal with my health in a more positive way.
There's also info on this site that Deb A. and I have posted concerning allergy elimination treatment (NAET), but neither of us has followed the treatment long enough yet to give an opinion as to its effectiveness.
Good luck, and just take it one day a time, trying to get your health back...it will happen. Someone told me once to consider how many years to took to get like this, and not to expect an immediate "cure"...be gentle with yourself.

Thank you both for your response. I can't tell you how good it feels to hear from people who have been down this road. Because I am trying to change my eating habits and am new at this, if either of you have any tips regarding safe foods and beverages I would appreciate your feedback. My dilemma is that due to the nature of my business, I work long hours and have little time to stop and prepare meals. So I have started making several different types of vegetable soups on Sunday's. This way, I can freeze some of them to eat during the week and not backslide in to the junk/processed food trap. I also have been buying fish and chicken from the Wild Oats health food store in my area. I am drinking only spring water and green tea made with spring water.
Ruth, you had mentioned that vegetables and fruit could be problematic. Is there anywhere that I can get all natural produce? If not, I am not opposed to planting my own garden. I do not want MSG in my system at all, if I can help it.
I am beginning to feel more clear and alive than I have in a long time, and I don't want to do anything that will cause me to go backwards or prevent me from continuing forward to good health.
Connie, I also am hypothyroid (have been on synthroid for 21 yrs) and have a low basal body temp. Thanks for the tips on naturopaths and compounding pharmacies. I will definitely check them out on the web and will let you know of any progress made in that direction.

If you are reacting to the vegetable soup, you might need to try one vegetable at a time. Also, are you using any kind of broth as a base, or just water? So many vegetables are high in glutamates and tyramine, it leaves me with very few safe vegies to eat-red pepper and organic lettuce are the only things I am sure don't cause me migraines. For fruits, I eat oranges, apples, kiwi, mango, peeled, and that's it. Just about everything else has tyramine. Many people sensitive to glutamates have a problem with tyramine. Do a search on the web to find out which foods to avoid. This also includes eating leftovers-the tyramine level increases as foods sit. I have only a Whole Foods Market near me, but the only safe source of meat-type protein there is Contessa brand farm-raised, frozen shrimp. Only salt is added. They are already cooked, but I thaw them a few minutes in water and put them on the grill. I eat them with lemon juice and a safe butter or olive oil. I have never had a problem eating them. I have read on this board that the chicken and pork are not safe to eat from this health food store. I'm not sure about yours. I have read, either from Deb A's. book or on this board, that chicken is soaked in an acid bath to clean it, and fish is all sprayed with sulfites right on the boat where it is caught, so that it looks edible by the time it gets to shore. I have not found a fish that I trust yet. I guess I'd have to catch it myself. I eat beef, usually steak, that has been grilled. I eat this as a leftover the next day. Eggs are easy to eat at work. My favorite thing right now is French toast. It took me months to find a safe bread flour (soft, white, spelt flour), which I make in a bread machine. I do fine with organic maple syrup. (I throw away most of the yolk.) My main staple is organic brown rice with red beans, cooked as per Debby A's instructions. Bring them to a boil 2 or 3 times, and let them sit in between-several hours or overnight. They're good with olive oil and fresh, organic lemon juice. This is what I take to work, with lots of fresh fruit, homemade cookies (safe flour, no barley malt), and lots of Stretch Island fruit leathers from the health food store (apricot, blackberry, or apple flavors, only-other flavors have tyramine). I have given up all teas, green tea, herb tea. I might try adding some of the safer ones back soon.
Sorry for the long message; got on a roll. With advanced planning, you can eat really healthy, and feel good. When you can go even a few days, let alone weeks, feeling great, you really won't mind the little time it takes to prepare a batch of cookies that will last a week, or the grilling that takes really only a few minutes. Just occurred to me, living in PA., you may not be able to cook this way year round. Must be a substitute for quick, indoor cooking.

One more safe, easy food to take to work is a baked, organic, Russet or sweet potato. Stick to organic, as regular potatoes have Auxigro-MSG.

Yes, there is a solution for quick indoor cooking. For Christmas, my husband and I received a George Foreman family sized Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. I've used it practically every day since then. Sometimes twice per day. It's been a live saver. And FAST!!! I'm planning on bringing mine to Reno assuming we are driving. If you've got questions about it, I would love to share some of the things that I've done with it both following recipes and creating my own. Sincerely, Christine

Yes I have been quiet for a while though reading this board daily. As I indicated several weeks ago, due to severe drug allergies, I decided to seek out a Naturopathic physician to help with my high blood pressure.
Went for the first time last Wednesday. She put me on a weird hypoallergenic diet, where I have been logging any reactions after eating.
Now the bad part. She also put me on 2 different capsules: "Detoxification Factors" and "Quercetone" to help rid my body of toxins quicker. Never took the "Quercetone", since when I read the fine print it contained magnesium Aspartate or Citrate and/or Aspartic acid, to"fill space" whatever that means. Knew it wasn't for me!
I did, however, take 2 half doses of the "Detoxification Factor". Thought that I would die! Had a severe allergic reaction that took 2 days to go away.
On the other hand, the diet is wonderful. Have already lost 6 1/2 pounds and am not hungry. Am eating things like buckwheat groats, cream of brown rice, lots of fruit, fish and nuts of all kinds. Its actually tasty. And best of all, I have been rash -free for a week. My acid reflux disease is gone and I'll know tomorrow about the blood pressure but I bet its down too. I feel better. I'll let you all know what the new doc says on my follow up appointment tomorrow.

I have been suffering from migraines for the past 20 years and have had them on a daily basis for the past nine years. I went through all the tests and did everything all the doctors said and tried all the preventatives but nothing would work. Then about 3 months ago they become completely uncontrollable and my specialist was baffled. I knew I had to find the solution. I was laid off from my job so was able to start researching and discovered your web site. Everything began to make sense. I ordered the cookbook and read several books. I have been cooking everything from scratch but am still learing. I just discovered today that my yeast(red star) has msg added under a name I did not recognize from any of the books I have read. Luckily, I have not been eating much bread. My headaches are now 50% better and I know if I can get off of my medication(motrin, anaprox) I can eliminate more. It has been so helpful to read everyones entries and discover I am not alone. I have to admit my neruologist(who I will not be seeing again) told me I was obsessed! But, he was interested in what I was saying and told me to fax him info. He should be interested he just opened up a headache/research clinic! I have a question. One of my medications has a side effect that makes me constipated and in the past I had to take a laxative. Obviously, I can no longer do that. I have tried taking some pills from whole Health made of prune powder but they are not working. I went there today to look and the only thing I could find was Super Colon Cleanse. They are capsules(I called and they said they are made of bovine and hung up on me!) I am afraid to take these because they don't have bovine listed in the ingredients. What is bovine? Does anyone know if this is safe or can you recommend something else until I can get off of this medication? I am sorry, I did not mean to write a book! I would appreciate any help.

Tracy--You might want to try supplementing your diet with flax seeds to help improve regularity. Drink lots of water (with lemon slices). I don't know if will eliminate the problem, but it should help. As for laxatives, I'm not aware of a safe one. Someone else might, however.

You sound like you are making real headway, and I applaud you for listening to your own body. Doctors get all their info about MSG from the FDA and that info is so bogus, that we really can't fault the doctors. You can suggest that your doctor get a hold of Dr. Carol Foster who is a neurologist and head of the Valley Research and Headache clinic in Phoenix, AZ. I am not sure of the complete name but if he is interested, I can get you the correct address and phone number. The doctor has studied in London and here, and she gives classes using our book. She is quoted in the book in the chapter about the 1997 NoMSG conference. He should find that interesting.
Psyllium seed is also a good natural laxative. You can find it in most health food stores. Just stir a tablespoon to start with in water and drink quickly. Flax seed added to cereal, homemade granola, or the flax meal added to anything is good for anyone. I used to run between constipation and the extreme opposite for years, and not until I avoided MSG did I know what a normal BM was all about! I'm convinced that a huge number of people diagnosed with IBS or colitis (as I was) are actually reacting to the excitotoxins and other dangerous food additives in their diets.

Tracy-Almost any fruit or vegetable has fiber, some more than others, like celery, beans or bran. You might want to make sure you're getting enough, but always increase amounts gradually or you can become bloated/gassy.
Another option for constipation is a simple exercise that I use - it works great and can be done on a regular basis:
Lay flat on your back on a firm surface (floor, not bed). Start by raising your right knee to you chest, grasp it to you for about 30 seconds (it's less stress on your knee to hold with your hands behind the knee, rather than on your kneecap). Slowly lower your right leg to rest flat beside the left one. Now do the same with the left, raising and holding it. Repeat 3-5 times, alternating legs. Just remember to start with the right because that's the direction peristalsis (movement of food through the intestine) takes.

I will definitely try that exercise tonight and I will try the Tri-Salts. I assume I can find them at Whole Foods? I have been eating a lot of fruits and veggies but I am on a tricyclic anti-depressant for the prevention of migraines and taking psyllium has not worked in the past but I am trying it again(so far no luck). I bought pure Flax Seed oil and added it to my popcorn but I added too much and triggered a nasty migraine. I am starting at 1/2 tsp a day. Hopefully a combination of all of your ideas will help me until I can lower the doses and get off of it. Deb- Thanks for the info and support. I would like to get the info about the clinic in Pheonix because I am sure my doctor would be interested. If he has this info he will be able to help a lot of headache sufferers! Tracy -- I thought I would mention that popcorn gives me headaches, like a milder MSG headache. Just plain organic popcorn popped the old way in safflower oil, and plain salt added. A lot of us have trouble with all kinds of corn products. Like Carol H. says, popcorn is anything but a fresh veggie.

This practice was recommended by my allergist (surprise, surprise). When I described the problem to my allergist (MSG and other types of reactions), he freely admitted that traditional allergists and medicine would probably not be of much help. My description included symptoms and a fairly technical description of what I believed the problem to be (MSG, tyramine, histamines, MAO-A and MAO-B type interactions). He seemed to fully understand and indicated that he had had a problem (not related) that traditional medicine could not solve and that he visited these people. They treated and solved his problem. By the way, the allergist has treated both myself and my daughter for other problems. In fact, he found a problem that my daughter had that three other doctors could not find. So, I have a great deal of respect for him.
I have not been, but I have spoken to them. I plan to go within the next few months.

I've been out of town for a month so forgive me if you have already solved the problem of constipation. I have found that water with fresh lemon juice works really well. (More than 1/2 lemon a day works too well.)
