Hi, I'm Purple_Kangaroo. I have been diagnosed with migraines (more like mini seizures than headaches), IBS, allergies and food intolerances, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, among other things.

I had the opportunity to participate in a double-blind placebo-controlled study which involved patients with fibromyalgia and IBS going on a diet free of added MSG and other excitotoxins for 4 weeks, and then a 2-week challenge phase. The challenge consisted of 3 days in a row of drinking a juice that one week contained a dose of MSG equal to that in a typical Chinese meal, and the other week did not.

Before the study, I was unable to drive, needing to use a cane, and having great difficulty functioning in daily life due to severe fatigue, brain fog, balance and perception issues, pain and difficulty concentrating or sleeping. The study results were very clear that excitotoxins made a significant difference in both FMS and IBS symptoms. Both the number of patients that saw improvement, and the average amount of improvement, was huge. I'm so excited to have been able to be a part of this study. It should be published this year in journals, etc., and study author Kathleen Holton of OHSU will be publishing a book on the excitotoxin-free diet as well.

I am still discovering things that I need to avoid (this week I realized that peanuts are a significant trigger for me), but my quality of life has vastly improved. I am able to do things now that I never would have been able to do a year ago. My brain fog is better, the balance and visual perception issues are almost completely gone (unless I mess up and ingest excitotoxins), I can drive again, I have more energy and less pain, and I am overall more functional and don't feel nearly so much like I am missing out on my own life.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and learning even more how to eat so that I can be even more healthy and functional.

Can you tell us in a little more detail what you ate during the 1st 4 weeks? Just curious, what did they consider were 'other' exitotoxins? Was the study through a university? How many participants were there?

Purple-kangaroo, good for you. It was a blessing for you to be a part of that study. A little scary for those of us that have recognized our problem with Free Glutamic Acid (the thing that makes MSG so bad for us). Just the thought of ingesting something that is laced with it is hard for me to think of, since it reeks such havic with me. Stay with it and keep eating well, all of the people here are willing to help you achieve your goal of being healthy. We have all been there or are in the throws of healing and eating safe foods. The food industry does not make it easy, but we are getting stronger and healthier. Our voices are going out further all the time to help others get better also. Check out the archives and check in to keep up with what new products you can eat and what ones have suddenly added offending ingredients. Anxious to help. Mariann, I found a ginger candy that we use as a cough and throat drop if we aren't at home. There are actually two companies making them and they are both corn-free. Reed's ginger chews and The Ginger People ginger chews. They even carry them at our Kroger. We love these things! I still love ginger tea best, but it sure helps to have something portable.

I remember feeling much the same way a year ago. Fatigue is my only remaining symptom besides not being able to lose weight (I feel like they are related). My only food allergy is corn and soy. I found that after I improved so much by removing excitotoxin additives, I still had some issues. Cleaning up my diet and keeping a food journal (I learned all that here) allowed me to figure out eventually that all food additives bothered me. All msg type additives are made from corn and that finally led me to learn more about removing corn.

I am so happy for you starting your journey to health. It is truly remarkable to see how all these things affect our bodies. There are lots of supportive and very smart people here. Just ask anything you need and you will get some good answers.

Kristy I just picked up some Crystallized Ginger from "The Ginger People". It says all natural candied baby ginger (well we know that "natural" doesn't nec. mean safe.)The back says baby ginger and cane sugar. It says it is baby ginger steeped in cane sugar syrup. What do you guys think, how does it sound. It isn't organic and I am a little afraid of that, although I tried just plain not org. potatoes recently and I did OK with them. I got them from a farmer not too far from me. They are not cert. org. but are very fussy and only wash the spuds in cold water after harvesting. I just gritted my teeth and jumped in. I had a baked pot. with only safe butter and salt it was so good. So now I am feeling adventurous, but not reckless. I am anxious to try some of that ginger, but I will wait for a response. I am so interested in the corn connection and I can see how many of us may have vested interested in checking out the Avoid Corn web site that you mention in one of your post. Mariann, the Ginger People make some good stuff. That is not only corn free, but it is also the best tasting candied ginger I have ever had. The Ginger people even make a drink we can have. It is called Ginger Soother and it lists natural flavors on the label, but it refers to the tiny ginger solids in the bottom of the bottle. It is pure and safe, so enjoy!

I think local veggies that you know all about are better than organic. I can't wait to be able to shop at the farmer's market so I can get some safe veggies. I prefer organic and local, but I think I would go for local first. Organic can still be coated with waxes and washed with citric acid.

Kristy you are so right about the organic veggies, they are not all created equal. I have tried some that definitely made me sick. I tried three times just to make sure I wasn't reacting to something else and sure enough I finally got it through my thick head not to use organic veg. from of all places a super market. It stands to reason that they would find a way to mega produce "organic" stuff to jump on the gravy train. I agree local is a good way to go even if it isn't org. I tried little red roasting onions from a local farm that isn't cert. org. yet.. Very small farm and using the things she is learning from the local org. cert. farms around the state. I got eggs from her and asked about her veg. as far as fertilizing. She said just what the chickens leave for us. Sounded safe to me, so I tried. They were so darned good. I cooked some Italian Bell and Evans Chicken sausage, took it out of casing, added some of the onions near the end and put it all over a baked potato. I made gravy for hubby after I took my part out. Just a rue with butter and flour and then milk and the juices from the cooking. He said it was great. Even though I used Org. Valley whole milk which I can have and all safe ing. I didn't eat the gravy. I worry about cooking the proteins too much. So better safe than sorry for now. I am having some success and don't want to rock the boat. I am going to try that ginger and I will look for the Ginger Soother. I got it at a place called Back to Basics, they have a lot of safe foods there for me. My daughter got me a gift certificate for the store for Christmas and I just had a blast. Thanks for the info Kristy have a great day. Mariann

Thanks, all . . . yes, the study was through OHSU. We had a list of foods to avoid, and also had a lot of support and advice from the lady in charge of the study.

Kristy, I was really involved in the Delphi Avoiding Corn forum for a while . . . my youngest child was allergic to corn and soy also. I wonder now how much of it was actually corn/soy and how much was excitotoxins. I need to get back on the Delphi forum and start investigating those connections more. I think corn still bothers me, too.

I do like the Ginger People products.

A little more info. on the study:

We avoided excitotoxins for 4 weeks. Then we went in for 3 days in a row 2 weeks in a row, and each day drank a juice drink. One week it contained MSG and the other week it didn't--neither the researcher nor the patient knew which it would be, but for most it was pretty obvious.

Out of 37 participants with fibromyalgia and IBS, 84% reported more than 30% improvement in symptoms in 4 weeks of avoiding excitotoxins in our diets. Amazingly, 22% of the patients in the study had fewer than 11 points on the tender point exam after completing the diet, which would put them below the diagnostic criteria for fibro. At least 70% of the patients had more symptoms with MSG challenge than on the diet, but this doesn't accurately capture those who still had the same symptoms during both weeks of the challenge but they were much worse during the MSG week, so the number of those clearly affected by MSG was really higher than that.

Interesting study, thank you for sharing. I'm so glad you saw positive results.

How did they have you avoid excitotoxins? Did they provide food for you or did they give you a list of ingredients and foods to avoid? I think all of us here would be interested to see what ingredients they had the participants avoid. Would you mind sharing?

Mariann, I would like to find some raw milk for that very reason. All the organic milk around here has added vitamins (corn), but it and the ones without vit D are all ultra-pasteurized (also called UHT in the industry which means ultra high temperature treated), which I avoid. For right now any time a recipe calls for milk, I just use Daisy full fat sour cream and water. It works well and the waffles we made that way were the best ever! It doesn't have vit. D and it isn't ultrapasteurized and it is corn-free.

Purple Kangaroo, I would be very interested in the study, too, since I was diagnosed with CFS, FMS and IBS before I cut out all food additives. The only remaining affliction I have is CFS and it is much improved. I think it takes a long time to fix that or you just have to luck out and find a good doctor that understands thyroid and adrenals fully. I remember the first bit of improvement was on the msg avoidance diet and then vast improvement cutting out all food additives (I am allergic to soy, too, and didn't know it). Finally the most improvement still when I moved on to GAPS (avoiding processed foods and adding healing foods). I would be very interested to see what they included on the no-no list, too.

We get raw goat milk from a local farm, and love it. I seem to be able to tolerate it just fine.

She had a lot more support and knowledge to offer than just the list--I can't wait for her book to come out.

Common Additives Containing Glutamate

We are supplying you with two copies of this list - one can be brought to the grocery store and the other can be posted on your refrigerator.

- MSG (monosodium glutamate)

- sodium guanylate

- gelatin

- hydrolyzed vegetable protein

- hydrolyzed plant protein

- hydrolyzed oat flour

- hydrolyzed protein (any kind… soy, corn, wheat, etc)

- plant protein extract

- sodium caseinate

- calcium caseinate

- yeast extract

- textured protein

- autolyzed yeast

- malt extract (or flavoring)

- any kind of modified food starch

- soy (or whey) protein concentrate or isolate

- smoke flavoring

- bouillon, broth, stock, flavoring, natural flavoring (any kind), seasoning, spices, carrageen, and enzymes can all contain MSG (but don't always)

- L-cysteine (found in baked goods as a dough conditioner)


These are all found in processed food items like Asian food, chips, crackers, salad dressings, soups, nuts, protein powder, frozen foods, seasonings including spice mixes, marinades and sauces; meat (especially lunch meats and seasoned meats), and processed baked goods (especially low carb, and low sodium ones)....

Do not use any foods listed as sugar free or containing artificial sweeteners like aspartame, Splenda, saccharin etc.

It is recommended to shop at a health food store for groceries. You still have to read labels, but you have many more safe foods from which to choose. Amy’s is a good brand name to look for if you want soup, salad dressing, or frozen food items; but still check labels for the above ingredients. Safe deli meat can be found at New Seasons. Try to eat more fresh food this week and only water, coffee or tea for beverages. You can sweeten coffee with either sugar or a natural sweetener called Stevia (sold in a green box called “Sweet Leaf” in Wild Oats). Stevia is a naturally sweet plant. Its leaves are sometimes added to herbal tea (you can see it listed in the ingredients on the box). It is a safe alternative, but watch for “natural flavor” which is sometimes added, as well as added fiber which can exacerbate problems if you are prone to gas.

I just re-read my original post, and realized I left a word out. I was not ALWAYS needing a cane or unable to drive, but often was. I was unable to drive for weeks at a time, and was almost always taking the cane along anywhere I would need to stand for any length of time or do much walking, and sometimes using it around the house also.

Kristy the Organic Valley whole milk has no vitamins added to it including D, but it does say ultra pasturized. I don't react to it plain, but I don't heat it again in cooking because I am afraid it will tip the scale. The Daisy solution sounds great. Mariann

HOW TO GIVE (and possibly cure) YOURSELF FROM PARKINSON'S

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
1. A dopamine agonist (adderal works well here)
3. Monosodium Glutamate (any form - I used Taco Bell's deliciously-toxic meat which is full of autolyzed yeast)
5. The will power to fast for 18-24 hours
6. Insomnia

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Begin with the fast around 7pm: Im talking nothing but water (or alcohol) for 18-24 hours. I mean it. Not even a nibble of a crouton. You really want to starve your brain for as long as possible.

Take an adderal around 10pm - depending on your tolerance, I recommend anywhere from 20-30 mg. Being legal amphetamine, Adderal really rocks your neurotransmitters with a one-two punch. Not only does it force the pre-synaptic neuron to release its dopamine, it also acts as a reuptake inhibitor, keeping the same neuron from sucking it all back up. Like a real meth head, you're really getting that dopamine flowing in your synapses, yo.

Next: DONT SLEEP - I mean it. Stay awake through the entire night. Not even a snooze. The adderal helps here. Also netflix binging all seasons of "Breaking Bad" seems appropriate.

After a long night of Walter White in his underwear (no ones judging you), take another adderal around 7am. Between the adderal and lack of sleep, your pre-synaptic neurons should be releasing dopamine faster than you can say "Why am I purposely giving myself a neurodegenerative disease LOL?" You're doing it because all the cool kids are, and because Michael J. Fox once said "To cure a disease, you first must understand what causes it." Great Scott Marty, you're right!

We are at the homestretch now-stay focused. You should feel wide awake at this point, either from the adderal or my sweet MJF quotes. And by now your brain knows somethings up as its pulling all the energy from anything it still has left in storage. Don't give in now! You're almost there, champ!

The vicious headache that immediately follows is what's called a "glutamate storm". Make sure you're around a toilet, because your body will immediately try and puke out the entire helping of Taco Bell/General Tso's Moo Goo Gai Pan/etc. Right now your neurons are literally being "excited" to death by the glutamate-causing-excitotoxicity you so foolishly introduced by listening to some stranger on the internet. Your brain will feel like its on fire. You'll pray for death as the pain becomes unbearable. Youll want to scream and cry at the same time. It will feel like someone released a thousand fire ants armed with ghost peppers between your ears. Are these enough analogies for everyone?

Your great grandma took her entire life to get this much brain damage. You did it in only (insert number of years alive here). Rock on, bro.

WHY IT WORKS:
Because science, baby. And because on 6/9/16, it worked for me (tiny violin playing).

The key thing at work here is "Glutamate Excitotoxicity", and it just caused a forest fire throughout your neurons. As your brain starves for an energy source from your fast, it will immediately send anything that comes through your gullet straight to its greedy, obsessed self (turns out my brain and my ex have something in common). This essentially gives the MSG a unobstructed trip straight from your stomach to your brain, and a free pass through the oh-so-important Blood Brain Barrier. Seriously, your brain becomes more desperate than your creepy 38-year-old aunt on Tinder. And that combination of adderal and fasting we did earlier? Dopamine is neuro-protective within the neuron. And while dopamine resides within the neuron, its protected against damage from glutamate. Ive spent the last 7 months of my life in a downward spiral. This will literally deplete all your neurotransmitters instantly, and throw you in the deepest, darkest depression you can imagine. The phone in my pocket can literally access all the information in the world, stalk my ex on Facebook, and watch a cute puppy video all within a few clicks, and were still treating Parkinson's with the crap we found in the 60's? I call bullsh*t. Ive been trying this method for only a few weeks, and my brain has slowly come back alive (actually almost better than before in some way). The depression/brain fog has lifted, my sleep is slowly coming back, and I'm feeling more like my old and perky self!

So my theory is this. Starve your brain for energy, and whatever you eat will be sent straight to the brain first. The same method that gave me brain damage can be used to reverse said brain damage. A term i've coined "Catapulting" (don't steal it or I swear I'll sue) is sending toxins (or nutrients) directly to the brain by bypassing its natural defenses. The Blood-Brain Barrier is the gatekeeper to our most precious organ, but I've found that under the right circumstances, the BBB can be bypassed as long as you force your brain to become desperate for energy. Remember the movie Independence day when they couldn't destroy the evil alien ships until dropping it's shields? Just like that.

So say this theory of "Catapulting" works. My next challenge was finding the right "antidote" to send in to fix the damage done by MSG. Who would even believe you to get this "Cure" researched? Would be wonderful if your theory worked, though! All we know for now that works is changing what we eat to avoid this terrible toxin. Doctors are now prescribing glutamate blockers like Pentagabin for neurological disoders, which have bad side effects.Keep working on that "antidote"!
