Hello, my name is Sandi and I have just realized that maybe the source of my fibromyalgia, IBS and heart arrythmias are coming from the MSG ingredients found in food. Last weekend, my husband and I grilled steaks on the barbaque and next day, I had a violent episode of IBS in the morning. I figured that it was due to eating corn or steak even, since I dont eat them that often and wrote it off. Next weekend, we decided to barbacue again and I made different side items from the previous weekend. Next day, even more violent IBS attack with stomach pain that has continued all day long. I was discussing it with my husband and he showed me the seasonings that he seasoned the steaks with and when I checked the ingredients, to my dismay, monosodium glutemate was on the bottle. Needless to say, in the trash it went. I have battled for years with fibromyalgia and I knew that i did have a sensitivity to msg and thought that I had cut out enough things to avoid having issues with it and I never tied in my fibromyalgia to the possibility of it being related to msg. I am new to this and now realizing that I am not going to be able to eat the way most people do and it really stuns me that this is an accepted practice that we do here in the USA to our food supply. My husband and his family are from South Africa and they do not allow preservatives like this in thier foods there, so he is always ranting about how Americas food is bad. Anyway, im starting to see the light and its going to be a tremendous thing for me to go on a natural, raw food diet. I need others who have been there and I want to be a part of a movement against the practice of this being accepted in this country where the obesity and autoimmune diseases are happening to all ages and an alarming rates. Please help me in this journey, I need encouragement and information to help me to make better choices for myself and family nutritionally. There arent many organic resources around here to choose from, only a couple of health food stores with limited supplies.

Welcome to the message board Sandi! We are here and happy to help you in your journey. Have you ordered Deb's book yet? I've had her book for several years and still reread it for help and support- it's a great starting point.

A small home garden is a great option when organic product isn't available. Do you have a small patch of land to grow a few things?

A lot of what I eat I find at regular grocery stores. I've also found grocery stores are willing to special order products for customers as well- don't be afraid to ask.

Hi Sandi,

I had a lot of the same symptoms as you when I started and I feel so much better now. I also have limited access to organic fruits and vegetables where I live. Now is a good time to experiment with those veggies that you used to pass by in the produce section because you were unfamiliar with them. Brown rice and safe meats (I drive an hour to get to my butcher) are a good start but you will gradually find other things to add to your diet. I order some things from the internet, I make lots of things from scratch and I buy some from Whole Foods (I only go once a month or so because it is two hours away). I ordered yogurt starter from the internet and make my own (surprisingly easy and impossible to find safe in the store).

They do have recipes that call for unsafe items like soy sauce but I find inspiring ideas for things like collards and butternut squash that were available from my produce section all winter.

I agree that Deb's book is a vital resource. It helps tremendously in the beginning and you will refer to it over and over. Just remember that you will have to customize your diet to your needs. Just because a veggie is organic doesn't mean I will be able to tolerate it and I do eat some veggies that aren't organic and do just fine with them. Meals are more challenging since I can't eat potatoes, carrots, eggs, vinegar, most fruits, dairy, etc. but I can tolerate cabbage and it is always available (pretty versatile, too). I do a lot of experimenting with alternative flours, new veggies, cooking techniques, etc. and it is an adventure.

My children are also glutamate sensitive so they are learning right along with me. They are learning so much about shopping for and preparing food. (We also started a raised bed garden) My goal is to teach them to do all of this on their own when they are grown so we are starting new food traditions. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but you will gradually learn what works for you and develop a system for your family. You can search the message board when you need info - I post questions on here all the time and someone answers.

Welcome Sandi, this board is the right place to come for help and answers. We've all been where you are now and although there is a learning curve, the journey you are about to enbark on is so worth it. For me free-glutamic acid (the toxic part of MSG) makes my sacroiliac joints inflamed, thus painful. I get symptoms within 20 minutes of ingesting it. First of all you might want to try the "MSG free diet" as found on the home page link, and go from there, adding one food every day or two to see what makes you react. You may need to go slowly in the beginning to get all the built up toxic effects out of your system and let your body begin to heal itself. I have been on a "safe" diet for about 3 years and I think I am still continually getting better. Just curious, have you read the posts on the topic "Share Your MSG Story/Recovery "? They are a great read :-)

Anyway, glad to have you join us and looking forward to getting to know you better.

Hi Sandi,

Welcome. Deb's book saved me. The book (and maybe this site) has a list of ingredients that are "hidden" forms of msg. I search just about every day on this board to find information. There are lots of us "with you".

Reading the MSG Stories on this board was such an eye opener and a great comfort to find that I wasn't crazy.

Good luck...keep searching, posting and eliminating the poison.

Hi everyone, I have been reading and reading all the posts for the past two and a half months in hope that MSG could be the reason for my sons seizures he has been having since he was 8 months old. He is now 15 years old, we have been down every road that we come up on trying to figure out what is going on with him. Medical doctors weren't able to tell me what was causing them so we left western medicine about 10 years ago...I don't want to get into all that we have researched and tried but I will say we haven't been back to medicine primarily because not one of the 13 have ever worked! In a way, I think that may have been a blessing in the long run...it has REALLY been a long run. Anyway, my question to all of you is, my son has been eating MSG free, I think, for the past two months. Some days I think he may be showing improvement but then he goes to bed that night and has three seizures. Then it takes about 3 days to build him back up. I know I am not doing everything perfect with his diet but shouldn't I see more good days or could this really take some time? Once again, he has had this problem for 15 years...I guess it is going to take some time to clean it all out, right? That is what I am telling myself, at least. Any info would be soooo helpful. Hi Pam, Welcome. What method are you using to avoid msg? do you cook everything from scratch or do you buy only safe product brands? If you have been following the avoidance diet and your son is still having seizures, maybe you should broaden your aviod list to include some other common allergens. We have a problem with all corn and soy derivatives so we had to cut out all enriched foods (including vit D milk) and the enzymes used to make cheese give us a problem. Also, prewashed produce and grocery store meat because citric acid gives us problems so we only eat pasture raised meats not treated with citric acid.

My recommendation would be to go to a very clean diet for a week to see if you could get him completely seizure free and then slowly add things back in - avoiding problem foods. I have found that the closest we can stay to natural foods, the less troubles we have. The same goes for vitamins, supplements and medicines. The ones that aren't absolutely necessary, should be avoided for the week to make sure there isn't an ingredient in the medicine that is bothering him.

You might also want to check into the GAPS diet. There is a discussion right now about GAPS helping seizures on the Yahoo Group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/GAPShelp/

Maybe someone that actually suffers from seizures will respond. Good Luck,

Hi Pam,

My son had seizures and I wish I had known about MSG and had the internet when we were trying to get them under control. I believe diet can play a role, and I want to be incouraging without giving false hope. I have also heard that it's important to maintain blood sugar level and good restful sleep - but you probably know that. My experience is it can take a long time to 'clean up' your body from toxic effects. The length of time differs with everyone. The longer some of us avoid free-glutamic acid (FGA) the better we feel and can tolerate a tiny bit of it. Not knowing your son's background it's hard to say if avoidance will help, but it's certainly worth a try. Deb's book is a great reference tool. Have you read neurosurgeon/lecturer, Russell Blaylock's book "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills"? He has written 3 books, the last being "Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life" but I've haven't read this last one yet. I know with seizures there can be different causes and triggers, but if you want to get help on FGA avoidance this is the BEST place to be. Deb and so many of the posters here are knowledgeable with great advise....ask lost of questions and search this board as well. I wish you and your son all the luck in the world.

I just wanted to wish you luck in finding answers for your son. My reaction to MSG is in the stomach and not seizure related at all so I'm not able to give any advice in that area.

I agree with Kristy to keep a very clean diet with just a few ingredients and see if you can get a full week or two seizure free, then slowly start adding back foods. That way you can tell if its MSG or another ingredient that is causing the reactions. Keep a detailed food journal and track reactions to recent meals.

Thanks everyone. I am only feeding him whole foods that I prepare myself. I think I have noticed that he doesn't do good when he has peppers, red and green. Also, I KNOW tomatoes caused a reaction. He can eat rice but not too much at one time. Maybe like just once a day or once everyother day. I also noticed that he reacted bacly to lamb I made in the crock pot. Like it says in Deb's book, the first year is trying to figure out what is good for you and what is bad. Talk about a challenge!! Thanks again to everyone for the help.

Pam I just want to add my good wishes to the others, you have found a good place to get help. I hope it all works out for you. Remember things like toothpaste can be a problem. I switched to plain baking soda and a lot of my mystery headaches disappeared. Also changed contact solution for my eyes and gave up eating potatoes. Many are sprayed with chemicals that are a problem. I started by just not eating the ones from Idaho as was suggested, but then just said I am better off without them unless I can get organic from my farmer's market. Also the grass fed meat that Kristy spoke about. I think she mentioned a web site Eating Wild and a place where you can order safe meat. I thought just plain meat and a potato would be safe, I was wrong. I use only organic veg. because I react otherwise. Some people here can use veg. and just wash them well. Thanks Mariann, you brought a tear to my eye on an already emotional day for me. I am only using baking soda now instead of toothpaste...his teeth never looked so white! I also only buy organic potatoes and am doing my best with the organic veggies. If they are there, I buy them. I will check out Eating Wild. Hi Pam, I am in the same position as you. My daughter has seizures from 3 months old and she is 17 years now. She was born healthy, but triggered by the "childdisease" vaccinations babies get when they are 3 months old. Then all these problems started. It's almost the same story as your son's; medicine don't help, doctors can't tell me what is the problem. Anyway my intuition tells me for years there is something in the food that triggers her. Fortunately I found all the information about MSG and other additives, but I am in the beginning of my journey. So I have not (yet) an advice for you based on my experiences. I bought 2 books which are very helpful for me to learn at least which additives are very bad, especially also the neurotoxicity ones. The books are small, all names on alphabet,easy to take with you in your bag while you're shopping. It tells you clearly what to avoid. I first suspected MSG might be my problem when I had a really strange reaction to some smoked almonds, and then had the same reaction a day or two later when I ate a bowl of Lipton soup and some barbecued potato chips. It's hard to describe but at first I thought I was having a heart attack-it starts out with what I can only describe as a "prickling", tingling feeling and it progresses to this extreme crushing tightness in my upper chest, and across the backs of my shoulders. It is accompanied by the most awful burning sensation..thankfully it only lasts 1-3 minutes but they are really nasty minutes and it always occurs within 2-4 hours of eating. I tried Deb's diet for a week and was reaction free for the first time in a month. I decided to start reintroducing foods on Saturday and had an organic brown rice cake, with organic peanut butter, honey and an apple -mighty tasty and no reaction. Sunday I took my little one to the zoo and brought a chicken breast from home and some mozzarella cheese and ate a few (6 maybe) of her plain Lays potato chips and had 2 sips of her Coke(regular not diet) and driving home I noticed the tingling but no tightness. All was well until yesterday-when my husband brought home some pulled pork (without barbecue sauce) and I had maybe 4 bites of the sandwich-sure enough 2 hours later tingling, tightness,and burning ensued. For dinner I made the chicken with vegetable saute I had been eating when on Deb's elimination diet(that I never reacted to) and for dessert I had 2 homemade organic chocolate chip cookies sure enough 2 hours later again the burning crushing tightness.
Now today I decided to go back to what I knew and what I hadn't reacted to and had the rice cake, peanut butter honey and apple for breakfast and sure enough 2 hours later burning, tightness-and for dinner a hamburger and a baked sweet potato and you guessed it burning tightness.
I'm at a complete loss-now it just feels like anything and everything I eat is going to make me react and I don't know what to do and I'm starting to think that maybe I have some awful heart condition or maybe it's all in my head. My husband is really skeptical that all this is coming from food I'm eating and of course his skepticism deepens when I start reacting to things I didn't react to just days ago.
I'm sorry for going on and on but I feel like I'm at the knot at the end of my rope. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The timing makes me think the reaction could be gastric in nature. Have you tried antacid tablets for the crushing pain? I've attached a link to what I suspect, but I'm not a doctor and the recurring nature of the symptoms makes me think you may have to see one.

Thank you for the input Roy-I guess it's possible it could be GERD (I have some zantac in the house I will try). I have experienced heartburn in the past but it's never been accompanied by the very, very tight feeling nor the tingling that this causes. I think the reason why I think/thought this was a reaction of some sort is because I have had rashes/hives on and off for years which I always put down to "sensitive skin" and racing heart/palpitations that I can usually relate back to something I ate (I thought food dyes originally)and from what I read this seems to be the a very typical reaction to MSG (i.e. chest pain, tightness, tingling one article described it perfectly as: "an inexplicable squeezing has wrapped around your chest").
I will call my GP today and can probably (with any luck) get an appointment next week to discuss it with him-he is traditional but occasionally open minded :-).
And I will try the zantac and see what happens.

Jacqui, My mother had reflux so bad that she couldn't eat anything past 2pm or she would be in misery all night. She took a pill every day and still suffered, but without the pill it was excruciating. Now she doesn't have that pain anymore because she took food additives out her diet. I do believe it sounds like reflux that you are experiencing but reflux is an allergic reaction. You need to figure out what you are allergic to and remove it from your diet. It sounds like most food additives (even hidden ones) are causing you problems so that means corn and/or soy. Try removing all additives from your diet and see if that helps. You will be sensitive in the beginning so it may take several days to see good results.

Thanks so much for the info-I've gotten so afraid to eat anything that limiting my diet won't be a problem. As it is right now I shop only at Whole Foods and my local farmers market for veggies, fruits, meats and dairy. (I cut corn out after watching Food Inc and a Monsanto documentary) and I don't buy soy based products-but I still would bet there are things in my fridge and cupboard that are offenders so I will check the links you sent carefully.

Thanks bo'nana-I will say no matter what--I'm grateful this has happened because it's made me so much more aware of what I was putting into my body and my families bodies and no matter what we won't be going back to blindly putting things into our mouths and we certainly will be very cognizant of the fact that we have to be responsible for discovering what we think is safe for ourselves and not count on the government to protect us.

I feel exactly the same way Jacqui. I could never go back to eating as we used to eat. Everything out of packet and just trusting the labeling that implied it was good, healthy "food". Having learned so much over the last few months i dont think half those packets should even be able carry a "food" label!! You're on the right track to health and well being Jacqui and Bo'nana is right, it does get better.

I've been having alot of new health problems lately with no real reason for them. I know I have a problem with MSG but forgot about it since my symptoms are different than before. It used to be swelling and chest pains. Now it is joint pain and gall bladder pain, along with tingling feelings. I just ate plain Lays (threw the rest of the bag away) and my fingers started aching and swelling, and my jaw is tingly. I have been to many doctors (ER) with gall bladder pain (severe) and they could not find anything wrong. I was scheduled for any endoscopy and colonoscopy but had a reaction to the movie prep and cancelled the procedures. I dug out Deb's book and am just starting to work on eliminating MSG again. I was quite lax for a while. I am glad to be back on board as I am sure it is the root of my problems. I was diagnosed with a 50% block artery in my brain on my 46th birthday, nice but my goal is to reduce or eliminate this blockage. I bet MSG plays a part in this too. I went to the ER with slurred speech and blurred vision, no reason for it. They think it was a blood clot that dissolved on it's own. Now that I think about it, I think I am correct in the MSG assumption. I am 46 with a few health problems but nothing major.

I'd appreciate any tips, support anyone can offer. I have a soon to be 7 year old that I need to be around for and a husband that probably thinks I am somewhat nuts with all my problems.

I'm no doctor, but the jaw symptoms would have me concerned about a blockage near my heart and the slurred speech would have me concerned about one in the brain. Until the doctors figure out what's going on I would be taking low dose aspirin if tolerated:

Cheryla, I had all the earlier symptoms that you had. But since you said that you have forgotten about avoiding MSG (please correct me if I'm wrong)you now notice your symptoms escalating. I would not assume that your health problems are "nothing major". When a doctor can't find a cause, the possible cause can be glutamate toxicity, since a glutamate sensitive person will only get worse if they continue to eat foods rich in it. Tingling jaw, gall bladder pain, joint pain..all typical MSG caused symptoms. If you bought your book a long time ago, there may be hidden sources you are not aware of...autolyzed yeast, yeast extract, citric acid, carrageenan..even gel caps. But if your artery is now blocked and the doctors see that, why are they not treating it? Are they assuming it has dissolved? That's a bit scary.

Thanks Roy and Deb. The jaw symptoms are very rare and yesterday happened after eating Lay's. I do take 325 mg of aspirin (coated). My heart, gall bladder everything checks out fine. I guess they don't treat blocked arteries until they are like 90% blocked. I'm going to work with diet and see if things absolve. I will see my doc next month to check on things.

I know I got overly busy and lax in my food issues, must make it a high priority. Today I feel pretty good. I do take alot of things in gel caps. I am going to temporarily stop my vitamins and just take my essential meds for a time to see if that makes a difference.

I'll be totally honest, I'm a bit skeptical about the connection between MSG and my migraines. Probably mostly because I've suffered for 22 years and have yet to find a reason or any type of relief so to think that this may be the answer makes me doubtful. I dont have all of these weird and intense reactions that ive read others have...I just have migraines but they are really bad. I have anywhere from 2-6 a week. Someone suggested that I should try to avoid foods that have MSG in them but never did I imagine that so many foods contained this. Well even though I am very skeptical and not quite sure how I am going to maintain this diet, I went to the store today and bought groceries. I am going to give it a try and PRAY that it works. Its going to be difficult because I don't really like eggs, fish, or reheated meats. Finding foods that I can eat for lunch while in my car is going to be hard. I'm going to give thus a go and see what happens!

krystal, If you do decide to stick with a no-MSG diet this website is the best I've found for help. This discussion board is super supportive with lots of information scattered throughout. Have you read the "share your MSG story/recovery" topic yet, it is inspiring. Eliminating MSG or free-glutamic acid (FGA) from your diet seems daunting in the beginning, but it does get easier as the weeks go by. You will eventually find foods that you like and as you realize the health benefits and feel better than you have in years, how worth it it is. As for you not having "all of these weird and intense reactions", I didn't either. For me it took a couple of weeks to see a difference, but for some it takes longer. Everyone is different with symptoms and recovery. I used to have pain almost everyday and now I rarely do. It didn't cure my underlying problem, but certainly helped with the pain. It was the best thing I've ever done for myself. What have you got to lose, except your migraines?

krystal, I was overwhelmed when I discovered MSG was the cause of my racing heart and migraines ...my only reactions for the first 8 years(and there was little help out there 17 years ago)..then I went down hill, gathering more and more symptoms through the years. Are you following the test diet at our site? Fresh or frozen fruit smoothies are good during the diet. I add dry egg whites or liquid pasteurized egg whites (Crystal Farms at Walmart) for more protein. Hang in there. It's worth every effort you make. If you do feel a difference, believe what your body is telling you. Be aware that supplements and vitamins are also sources of free glutamate in the fillers, binders, coatings, and gelatin capsules. Krystal, There are many people on this forum that have found relief from their migraines by following this diet.

For me, along with this diet, I also needed to strictly follow the traditional "migraine diet" to keep my headaches under control. MSG is on the list of the "migraine diet" but there are a dozen additional foods to avoid.

I never thought I'd find relief from my headaches, but by controlling my diet, I get 1-2 mild headaches a month instead of 30 days of headaches a month. It has been life changing to get them under control.

I hope you are able to find similar success.

Emily, do you have a link to a favorite description of the traditional migraine diet?

I've recently been getting migraines, first a really bad ocular migraine and then without the visual aspect. I've found I have to cut out not just glutamates, but also most seafood (mercury), alcohol, and manage my blood sugar. If any one of these is off I can feel it coming on though sometimes I can stop it.

Also, someone recommended progesterone cream to me and I looked it up, and indeed progesterone is neuroprotective against glutamate (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20980684). Have you ever tried progesterone? I've been using cream (I looked for the one with the highest concentration in the health food store) from cycle days 10-28 and it seems to improve how I feel. A couple of times I used it when I felt the pressure at the back of my head starting and it may have helped. Mercola had an article with concerns of buildup from creams, so I'm switching to an oral sublingual version, Kenogen Progest-E but I just got it so no verdict yet.

If you try it I'd be curious to hear if it makes any difference for you.

I'm sorry to hear you have been getting migraines recently. I haven't tried progesterone cream to help. I react very poorly to medications so I try my best to avoid anything foreign. I have needed to use progesterone for short periods of time and did okay on the medication. I'm glad to see you are seeing some results from it.

I'm sorry to read on your other post that you are becoming more sensitive to msg. I've followed your son's story on here for years and I am glad to hear you are finding more answers. It's heartbreaking to watch your children struggle and not know how to help them.

I have a 4 year old daughter and it has been such a challenge to find the right diet for her little body. She is now dairy, soy, egg and gluten free and is doing very well. Because of my personal beliefs with MSG, I keep most forms out MSG out of her system but do allow her to occasionally eat foods that I don't eat. It's so hard to teach kids to say no to the foods that are around them.

Migraine diet. The book I like the most is called "Heal Your Headache, 1 2 3" by David Buchholz. I can't imagine someone doing this diet unless headaches are taking over their life. It's been really, really hard. I thought my diet was pretty limited with my msg free diet but taking away all of these foods has made me go through the mourning phase again.

I've been on the diet since September (I read about it on this forum from another poster). I've challenged fresh bread, chocolate, cheese, orange zest and lime juice and they all give me a headache within 48 hours. I'm so grateful I have a way to control the headaches but it has been a sacrifice.

Here are the foods I avoid:

Caffeine (including medications with caffeine)
Chocolate
All forms of MSG
Processed meats containing nitrates
Cheese (excluding cream cheese)
Yogurt
Sour cream
All nuts including peanut butter
Oranges
Limes
Lemons
Pineapple
Bananas

Thanks! This will be a good list for me to keep around. I've felt mostly great for the last week or so, and had a bunch of chocolate the other night without issue, so I'm hoping I can stick with just what I've noticed so far.

I did have caffiene, tempeh, avocado, green onions, cheese, sour cream, and lemon juice today. So I guess we'll see tomorrow. I think I'll be alright though.

Hello. Have been scarfing pretzels a lot in the last six months. Have given up wheat/corn previous to this and felt good except for when I cheated. But moods haven't been so good for a while then I made the connection by looking at ingredients on pretzel packet. Lo and behold: Msg. Found out msg consists of corn or wheat. That was quite a revelation! Stopped having them. Had headache and body aches for a couple of days but they disappeared. Mood has been going downhill since then. Particularly bad (depression/anxiety) over the last week. This is even worse than withdrawing from wheat or corn - just horrible. Know it's possibly connected to giving up msg. Just wondering how long this is going to last for? Anyone had similar experiences?
