I read this on a leaky gut site and found it very interesting:

FOS is a natural food substance with the properties of a natural fibre. It occurs in fruits amd vegetables. The FructoOligoSaccharide(FOS) group of compounds is particularly rich in plants such as Jerusalem artichokes and dandelions. Like other forms of fibre, FOS passes through the stomach and small intestine largely undigested. However, unlike other fibre supplements, FOS is an essential growth factor for beneficial intestinal bacteria. Once in the colon, FOS is selectively hydrolysed and fermented by bifidobacteria to produce acetate and L(+) lactate. The lactate is then further metabolised by other bacteria to produce butyrate and propionate.According to Biomed review by Dr.
Torben Neesby (Feb 1990), research suggests that the production of butyrate in the colon could be essential for a healthy and functioning colonic mucosa. Although FOS tastes sweet it does not encourage the growth of yeasts. Its natural sweetness makes it a welcoome addition to strict anti-candia diets, for exmple, and as a result scientist are looking at ways to incorporate it into nutrient fortified 'functional foods'.
Does anyone know anything about this and if so where do you get this stuff?

I also read in one of Sherry Rogers' books that some people may be sensitive to FOS. Be careful.

Well, I am not about to run right out and get some even if I knew where to get it. I am first going to see a Dr. who specializes in helping people with leaky gut( my husband hates that term) he prefers 'yeast' or 'candida'. This "word" bothers him? And this from a guy who guts and skins deer without batting an eye! I guess he just doesn't like using that term when he is talking to members of his congregation at church and asking them to pray for me. It sounds "indelicate"! I don't care what you "call" it-I just want to be rid of it!

Just an update with my test results. Tests for Carcinoid was negative, as were some other urine and blood tests for antibodies. But, the colon test for Candida was elevated. So, he wants to treat me with Nystatin, and probiotics, and of course, limit simple carbohydrates. He did say that I have "leaky gut" and that if we get rid of the yeast, then my symptoms towards MSG should improve. He says that he thinks I have several "allergies" to foods and chemicals. I wasn't about to argue at this point about being poisoned by MSG, but I know that what happens to me after eating MSG will not go away. Therefore, I will do the Nystatin thing for my general health, as I really do believe it supresses your immune system. I will never knowingly ingest MSG again.
Javonda, did you ever get past your yeast problem?

It's been awhile since I've posted on this board. How is everyone doing with leaky gut problems?
Javonda and Lisa Marie, how are you feeling? Did you take Nystatin and did it work? I am feeling great though still can't eat in restaurants. I eat everything now, as long as I prepare it at home. I have met a couple of people recently who are suffering from Candida and leaky gut syndrome and am wondering if others have had as much success in getting rid of it as I have. Please let me know. Thanks.

I guess this information is more than a little late, but FOS is available at health food stores. I believe the product Stevia Plus contains FOS. The stuff is so bitter I can't stand to consume it, even in tiny amounts. I tried putting it in my coffee and it tastes horrible. I was told I was using too much, but even a little bit tastes awful.
