After ingesting food that contains MSG, how long before you start to feel the effects of it? I am looking for other people's experiences. I seem to remember reading once that it can take days for symptoms to show up. Is that true? It seems like that would make it harder to track which foods cause your symptoms. Thanks guys.

My symptoms can start with an immediate burning sensation of the tongue or take 20 minutes to start and can still be around a week later.

I start to feel the effects of MSG within about an hour, I'd say.

Depends on how much I got. Lots - diarrhea immediately (I know TMI, sorry!), less maybe 12-24h before muscle twitching is felt. I barely get any anymore, I know better. Took a long time for it to sink in that it was not worth it to eat something I know would bother me.

within a minute
I consider myself lucky

My symptoms start at the 3rd hour wherein I pass out & sleep for the next 3-5 hrs. Can't move a bone. I usually don't see it coming. Sort of feels like getting a shot of anesthesia. I'm conscious, and then I'm not. When I awake, I'm groggy for an hour or two.....like being drugged.
If I'm lucky, I'll only yawn.....unusually very deep wide yawns & my eyes tear, all of which last for 5-10 mins. And then it's over. I'd rather the yawning vs un-unconsciousness, unfortunately that doesn't happen often.

Pat, I have the very same reactions to foods and to chemicals to which I am intolerant! I have the same yawns to perfume and other scents. Have you found anything that helps you at all other than avoidance?

Unfortunately, besides avoidance & Ibuprofen, I havenít found anything else that works for me. So I take Ibuprofen on rare occasions & hope I make the right decisions at all other times.

My son usually starts reacting within a couple of hours, but for me it's overnight unless it's a really big dose.
I've also concluded through observation that for my son the residual chronic reaction (which, by the way, is different than the acute reaction) goes about two weeks.

With a large reaction (if I ate a typical American meal), I react exactly 5 hours after eating with extreme stomach pain. Extreme pain lasts a few hours, then turns into an ulcer type pain in my stomach for several weeks.
If I accidentally eat a trace amount, I don't get the extreme stomach pain but 24 hours later I get a dull aching pain in my stomach that lasts 1-30 days depending on the dosage of the reaction.
