I have been on a low glutamate diet for a week in an attempt to help my fibromyalgia, so far i just feel worse but maybe thats withdrawal. Until i get deb's book all i am eating is fruits/vegies/lean meat/fish. All fresh and i pretty much steam everything including the meat.

Is this a good way of preparing meat to avoid too much free glutamtes?

I did feel worse at first as well... mostly mentally. I felt like I was going through a withdrawal. :-)

Then I felt a myriad of physical withdrawal symptoms as well.

It's best not to add liquid and high heat to meats. Its best to saute in a little oil, grill, or roast. High protein food + liquid or moisture + high heat =
free glutamate, the form found in MSG.
Yes, withdrawal is common. Are you taking any pills or supplements, James?

JamesC, Good for you for getting started on a low glutamate diet. I have never been diagnosed with fibro but have dealt with pain for over 30 years and have gradually found by trial/error and research what things help and what things worsen it. For me there is more than free-glutamic acid that I need to avoid, although that is the main culprit, for sure. Some other things that may help you is to avoid caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, spicy (hot) foods, sweets (it makes your system too acidic). Eating fresh turmeric, and taking ibuprofen & magnesium also helped. I went on a strict diet 5 years ago and now rarely have any pain at all. This website has helped me get my life back, so stick with it - but it may take a while to reap the rewards, they aren't usually instantaneous.

It could be withdrawal from casien/gluten, too, especially if you have gut issues. With leaky gut the proteins are broken down into morphine-like substances (their intermediate state).

Make sure your blood sugar is able to keep up. Some people with CFS (like my son) can't handle high protein diets. (You probably would feel brain fog if that were the case, but not necessarily).

Another issue, that I think I've been dealing with lately, is that sometimes when you start eating healthy and/or taking a lot of supplements, you can cause bodily systems to come online that haven't been working well for a while. B-vitamins are particularly known for this. The problem is sometimes you will start detoxing all this stuff that you never used to be able to detox, but if the liver can't process it all it swirls around and makes you feel sick. If you aren't getting enough calories and healthy oils this particularly can be a problem. I'd suggest adding a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil and a couple of organic virgin olive oil.

And then one more comment...you didn't mention them, but if you are eating a lot of nuts or greens, you may have to watch for oxalates. I'm pretty sure that's the cause of my spine and muscle pain lately (glutamate gives me migraines, as do sulfites, but this is a different feeling entirely). If you suddenly are eating a lot of chard, spinach, raspberries, blueberries, nuts, rhubarb, etc, then it could be something to look into.

Wow there are a lot of supportive helpful people on this forum :-)

I have decided to grill my meats with a little oil instead of steam.

Di i am already avoiding everything on your list except sometimes i do add a little chilli on my chicken. I have a very poor history with food though, i used to eat 2 large pizzas and ice cream in one sitting as recent as a few months ago so i have a lot of detoxing to do.

I am taking magnesium, calcium, taurine, D3 and turmeric. All powder only (i empty the capsules). The only pills i take are zoloft for the depression from the fibro. I have ordered some B6 powder online and am waiting for it.

Lisa i have awful lower back pain and am eating lots of raspberries, blueberries and rhubarb, i will google oxalates thanks.

I generally don't eat nuts but i had a craving today and had a gluten free nut bar, i am hoping i don't pay for it tomorrow :-)

My experience may have been somewhat different from the majority of people on here. I decided to detox from MSG as well as artificial colors and flavors all at the same time. I then also weaned off dairy, soy, corn, and all GMOs as well as caffeine and alcohol. With the encouragement of the people on this message board I also discontinued all of the many supplements I had been taking (which has given me some extra spending money). The first week I felt normal. The second I felt anxious--like I was coming off of some sort of drug (I was). Then I felt more physical symptoms such as body aches and pains that resembled fibromyalgia. I also experienced tingling as well as itching and burning (especially a night). What scared me the most was the weakness. In hindsight I was giving my body an opportunity to detox not only from MSG but also anything else that could have built up over the years (pharmaceuticals, etc). I know my friends and family were quite concerned, but what helped me a lot was reading about people's experience detoxing from aspartame (which there is a little more information about online than detoxing from MSG). Although I wasn't consuming aspartame previously right before the detox, it's also an excitotoxin, so their stories gave me hope. Emotionally, I felt anxiety on and off and I cried much more than usual. I started turning around 5-6 months later. It was around this point that I completely cut out genetically modified ingredients (the big four--corn, soy, cotton, and canola). At this point my body stopped aching. I began utilizing saunas which helped tremendously. Meditation helped calm my fearful mind. I then started bathing in apple cider vinegar which I later found out contains malic acid--a treatment for fibromalgia! It really worked. It helps you detox through your skin, it relaxes you, and the malic acid is great at alleviating muscle aches and pains.

I know everyone is different, and I hope the severity and duration of my detox is a comfort to some. My doctor told me that because of my size I was able to detox very rapidly which would explain why it felt violent at times. Generally when one detoxes, the toxins first migrate to fat cells. I am rather petite so I wasn't able to buy this extra time.

One more thing is that while there is so much great information available online about detoxing, what frustrated me was that every single resource suggested that the symptoms would last only a few days. This wasn't the case for me.

p.s. James, what withdrawal symptoms are you experiencing?

I just remembered that I had some others symptoms, including leg cramps, a swollen tongue, and at one point I was even salivating more. I should also mention that I was only 26 at the time (last year), and I had never ever in my life experienced anything like those symptoms I mentioned. In fact MSG never had any noticeable or recognizable effects on me until I started detoxing off of it. ;)

James, have you ever had lowered adrenal function? Turmeric lowers cortisol, and low cortisol will make you feel awful, especially if you have cut a lot of simple carbs out of your diet (the adrenals help regulate blood sugar). Turmeric is also high in oxalate: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18469248

Did you start all those supplements at the same time? Generally you should start one supplement at a time, at least 4-7 days apart, and work up from a small to a higher dose over time.

How much calcium are you taking? A little can help with oxalates, a lot can screw up the glutamate balance.

Thanks ada for sharing your experience,i am glad you have got through the detox process and have found some relief on the other side. I can only hope to follow your example.

My main symptoms have been an increase in my fibro pain, tiredness and gastrointensinal problems. Oh and my eyelid constantly twitches if i have something with glutamte in it...its anoying.

Lisa i will read up on cortisol, i have been taking tumeric at the advice of a naturoath for 3 months or so. I dont think i have ever had my adrenal function tested.

James, I really do think that it CAN be a good sign if you temporarily feel worse at first. I've never had any fibromyalgia symptoms in my life, but they came and went during the detox. So it would make sense that yours temporarily got worse. I forgot to mention I also experienced muscle twitching (fasciculation) as well. The sauna as well as apple cider vinegar brought me the most relief, as well as abstaining from all GMOs. But one thing your body also needs is time.

It makes sense if you think about it. While your body is flushing out toxins that had previously been stored, "the body tries to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be properly disposed of." So that would explain while a person that is detoxing literally feels as if he/she has been poisoned. Additionally, the weakness that is experienced is to due the fact that "the body's energies are directed toward neutralizing these old toxins, and so you may feel weak for a temporary period. Once the toxins are taken care of and an alkaline condition is reestablished, then strength returns to the limbs." I felt like the energy had been sucked out of my limbs, but it wasn't that my body had less energy--it was simply that all the focus was redirected to repairing my internal organs and overall detoxification.

I wish there was more information on detoxifying out there, but for now I think we are pioneering our own research on these message boards. :-)

I've read in a few places that if you are detoxing and feel really sick, you probably are going too fast...if you can't process the toxins out you risk them being reabsorbed. But Ada, that doesn't sound like what you are talking about...I agree that the tiredness/weakness can be a symptom of healing. But if it gets into feeling awful, personally I back off on the detoxifying supplements and wait until a day or two after the symptoms disappear before adding a little more, repeat.

I cook chicken on the stove or in a convection oven, but make successful broth with the bones by simmering. I also make beef stew.....a quick 10 min browning, then simmer 3 hrs on Low-Med heat.

Would chicken be okay if I lowered the temp after bringing it to a rolling boil? Is baking it in the stove in oil, flour, and milk okay?

I simmer chicken in water for soup after bringing it to a boil. I have a friend who reacts to chicken soup made this way, so she roasts chicken pieces till brown with onions, carrots, and celery. Then she drains the juices and drippings into a pot with water, scraping all the bits out of the roasting pan with some water added to help. She cuts up the veggies and adds them along with the chicken meat. She's fine with it, so it all depends on our own degree of sensitivity.

Our family hasn't had any problem with organic chicken cooked for a few hours in water. I think we might have once when I added vinegar ala Weston A Price.
