I have just had a hair tissue mineral analysis done and certain supplements are being recommended to me - some of which contain suspect ingredients. I am disappointed as I was very hopeful that this would be an answer to many of my problems.
Here are some of the ingredients contained in these supplements which may be red flags for someone with an MSG sensitivity:
Magnesium (from magnesium hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
Zinc (from zinc hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
Manganese (from manganese hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
Chromium (from chromium hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
Potassium (from potassium hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
Calcium (from calcium hydrolyzed rice protein chelate and calcium citrate)
Magnesium (from magnesium hydrolyzed rice protein chelate and magnesium citrate)
Zinc (as zinc hydrolyzed rice protein chelate)
L-Cysteine (as L-cysteine hydrochloride)
Does anyone know if hydrolyzed rice protein would cause an msg-like reaction like hydrolyzed soy or wheat protein isolate does? Also aren't minerals in the citrate form also a trigger? Is this form of L-Cysteine also a trigger?
If most regular supplements contain triggers for us MSG-sensitive folks, where can one find 'safe' supplements?

hi anon... my son & i are currently using a powdered Cal-Mag Citrate from Thorne Research for a bone/joint issue- so far we havent seen any problems with this particular supplement BUT (a BIG BUT) we weve been assured that this brand still uses Citrus derivatives and NOT citric acid from Corn, and this seems to make a real difference for us.
however- i do not know if this would be safe enough for those who are extremely glutamate sensitive. in my family we have experimented with many different brands and experienced reactions at some point from most... so far, our own experience has been mostly positive with Thorne, Carlson, and FloraHealth, as well as with pure alcohol based herbal tinctures... but even the 'cleanest' formulas are only safe if your individual system can tolerate it.
(case in point: a lot of people i know really love the 'organic' supplements by New Chapter- but my system reacts like they are poison, probly becoz i am highly sensitive to Aspergillus and i have been told that is what they are grown on)
sometimes it just comes down to a choice between the lesser of 2 evils- if you are severely minerals and stomach acid deficient (as i was for some time) it could be the best- or even only- way to get your body heading back toward some sort of balance. especially if you are just not digesting your food right now for whatever reason...
but regardless, it is always best to approach any supplementation with extreme caution, and keep your feelers tuned for any hint of a bad reaction that could throw you into a state thats worse off than before... sorry, not to sound overly negative- its just- been there, done that. ...more than once.
oh, i would definitely avoid anything thats been Hydrolyzed like the plague! that's almost certainly going to be a ticking time bomb. See what else your naturopath can recommend, if you are certain that supplemental minerals are necessary. you might look into Thorne powders or ionized liquids by Trace Minerals Research, they have cleaner formulas than the one you listed

I agree with bo'nana- I'd avoid anything hydrolyzed. One option is to eat foods that are rich in the minerals you are lacking. Here is a link for a great website that gives suggestions for essential nutrients.
I do a nutrition analysis a few times a year to see which nutrients I need to focus on more with my diet, then use this website to find which foods to eat more of.
I don't handle supplements at all. The only one I've been able to take is a tri-salts calcium supplement through Needs.com. Good luck! Emily
