Anyone that saw my orignal post will know that i eliminated msg from our household due to behavioural and sleep problems my little girl was suffering. As a result we have all seen dramatic improvements in our health and vitality as a family. I didnt consider myself msg sensitive prior to this, but having seen many minor niggles and ailments disappear over the last few weeks i realise how affected i was by my diet. After a few very good weeks of having no irritable bowl syndrome, ive been hit hard with it the last 24 hours. I think the culprit is tomatoes or wheat or possibly a reaction to some crumpets ( they are a sort of bread with air holes in that you toast). In the last twenty four hours ive eaten pasta, bolognese (home made from scratch) and the crumpets. My stomach has expanded to immense proportions and is painful and gassy. I noticed prior to eating the crumpets that while they are msg free they did contain some phosphates ( i cant name them as ive thrown out the package). I think im right in saying phosphates could be a problem if sulphite sensitive???? ( please correct me if im wrong) My question is, how do i tell the difference between s sulphite reaction and a free glutamate reaction? Id welcome any suggestions please. Im feeling more than a little frustrated after weeks of "getting it right!!" I should add that as a breast feeding mother i cant at this moment do the elimination diet as it would restrict my nutrient intake too much.
Thanks in advance for any help

Ali, a lot of us here have problems with phosphates, it is a culprit with lots of foods. Frozen, as well as fresh sprayed, meat sprayed with it to eliminate bacteria and such. As for the tomato sauce, if you cooked it too long you will free up the natural glutamate in tomatoes. As for the bread product yeast can be iffy also. The reaction that you described happens to me with fga (free glutamic acid) ingestion. I look like I am 9 months pregnant. Now is the time that gets frustrating for all of us. It will come again, realize that, but each time you will iron it out and move on. This is just a stumble, not a fall. Just keep using fresh real food, type in phosphates, there are many name combos for it and see what the archives say. The fact that you are keeping a clean diet is such a gift to your breast fed little one. Keep trudging forward and keep asking ques. as they arise. One of the big things is the length of time you cook even safe foods and the temp. keep it lower and shorter. Especially with high glutamate containing veg. and with proteins. I am sure others here will add their input as well. Keep us posted. Mariann

thanks mariann. Ive decided not to eat the three things for a week. The bread crumpets are now off the menu, ill make my own as ive seen rosie is a little contrary and argumentative today. Ill try the tomato sauce based bolognese again without the wheat pasta, and if there is a reaction i know its that. If no reaction then a week later i will try the pasta with a little butter and see where that leads. I suspect the crumpets but will tread carefully with the other two things. My stomach is now back to normal so thats a relief. To think i used to live with that on an almost daily basis and just thought it was one of those things!! Its amazing what you can learn to live with after a diagnosis of IBS. Im not disheartened just glad that my body shows a quick reaction and i can deal with it. Just think, if the reaction wasnt so obvious, i would continue eating things until i developed a more serious lasting illness. Quite a scary thought. Every reaction just makes me more determined to get this right. Thanks for your help Ali
