Aside from the gelatin capsules, does anyone know if Betaine HCL can cause MSG reactions? I just saw on the Beyond A Century website the one they have by NOW brand is derived from beets, but not sure if that is standard for all brands. The brand I have just bought is by Natural Factors and has Fenugreek in it instead of Pepsin (all others have Pepsin added).

I saw a thread from a few years back where someone had taken this supplement but took it out of the gelatin caps and took it straight in water - he said it wasn't very pleasant but seemed to be fine otherwise. Not sure it can be taken alone with water or maybe add it to olive oil or what's best there, but even if it is fine without the caps for some, if it always comes from beets, I think that is a big caution?

I will contact Natual Factors to see if they can tell me where their HCL derives from but am wondering if anyone has any further information they can share on this supplement as to it's safety from msg reactions or not.

I did some further research on my own as I didn't hear back from Natural Factors and found that BETAINE comes from beet sugar. Since Beets are high in naturally occuring glutamates, this most likely could cause reactions in some.

I suspect that one of the reasons I am so highly msg sensitive and now am limited to a handful of foods safe to eat is due to my low stomach acid. Everyone is different as to why they are sensitive or their own health constitutions, but I wanted to share all of this info in case anyone else can benefit from it.

I have been spending copious amounts of time researching supplements that can help aid in production of stomach acid and digestion and most have ingredients or are derived from sources that can cause msg reactions. However, I can take bitters herbs which is one of the things suggested for low stomach acid.

I do not know of the naturally occuring glutamate levels in any of the following bitters herbs but have put three stars next to the ones I am currently taking in tincture form and not having any adverse reactions to.

Most Commonly Known Bitters Herbs:

***Gentian Root
*Barberry Bark
*Globe Artichoke
*Goldenseal Root
*Hops Flowers
*Milk Thistle
*Yellow Dock

Bitters Herbs are to be taken 15-20 minutes prior to eating and it is helpful to taste them first directly in the mouth. The alcohol based tinctures are too strong for me so I will make a tea with them but will put a few drops on tongue first.

The two products I am taking are:

The Herbalist = Tummy-Ease. It has the above mentioned bitters with three asterisks and a few other herbs to help with digestion. It is in a base of alcohol and so I put the drops in hot water and let sit to allow the alcohol to evaporate. I put a few drops directly on my tongue first.

Herb Pharm = Dandelion (alcohol free)

I am only in my first few days of taking these tinctures and certainly will provide updates if I feel they are helping me.

I'd stay away from wormwood. I can't remember exactly what it does, but about a year ago I was reading about absinthe(sp?), an alcoholic beverage made with wormwood. I think the conclusion I came to was that it would cause a massive glutamate meltdown in me, based on the receptors it binds to.

The rest I don't really know anything about, except dandelions are a nutritious green. I use a lot of fresh ginger in my cooking.

I mix a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar with some honey and hot water if I need more acid. My son learned that in chiropractic school. I also make a lot of ginger tea when I feel a need to calm my stomach.

Thank you guys. I will pass this on to her. She did try the vinegar once, with really terrible results. I think her hiatal hernia is what is the worst problem.

I finally received a reply from Natural Factors about the Betaine HCL. It does in fact come from beets. Some may still be able to handle it, but I know I can't. Too bad.....hoping the bitter herbs help!

I recently found out my allergy to foods is caused by low stomach acid as well. Can you tell me what ended up helping you PLEASE!

All my issues started when I had some terrible acid reflux....took massive doses of Acid pills perscribed by docs. And I think this killed all my acid coupled with a bad diet. I really would love to know what happened with you.

I am looking for a supplement to help in protein digestion but find I also react to Betaine HCL supplements. Melinda never responded how the two supplements she was taking were working for her.

Can anyone suggest something besides apple cider vinegar in water before a meal?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
