Today I bought Weleda brand Calendula toothpaste and tried it with no bad reactions yet.

No reactions to date from the Calendula toothpaste. Also, the dental hygienist just told me that the tartar buildup on my teeth was less this time than it used to be.

I wanted to talk about toothpaste and found this older thread. I recently reacted very badly to carrageenan in a candy bar and it started me thinking about the carrageenan in my toothpaste. I think I falsely believed that since you don't swallow the toothpaste it is alright, but really your mouth is absorbing it twice daily and might be affecting you even without you knowing it. I started brushing with stevia and have been very happy with my new routine.

I react to toothpaste with carrageenan and I don't swallow it, either. It doesn't take much to affect me. Digestion starts in the mouth.

I have been using Weleda Plant Gel thanks to the great suggestions on this message board. However they recently reformulated it... now it contains magnesium aluminum silicate (also known as white clay, hectorite or kaolin).

If the box had simply changed to say "now with clay," I don't think I would have batted an eye. But something about seeing the dubious word "aluminum" on my beloved Plant Gel package just makes me very concerned. I avoid all products and foods containing aluminum. But I just don't know what to think about magnesium aluminum silicate. Does anyone have any thoughts? My findings on the web are inconclusive. I've since switched to the Weleda Salt Toothpaste.

Yes, aluminum compounds are said to be a problem if taken internally (see page 3). http://reach-compliance.eu/greek/documents/studies/neurotoxity/PGrandjean-PjLandrigan.pdf
