I am new to this website. I purchased Deb's book a few years ago read it did most of it but left much out like dumping my vitiamns. I still continued to drink soy milk eat protien bars and lots of stuff from the heath food store which I though was safe. My migraine condition recently became cronic and after much prayer the Lord reminded me to look at that book you bought again. Wow was I off target I was still using chemical toothpaste (Toms) and putting chemical shampoo on my head and eating almond and daiya chesses with all the fillers. I dumped all this stuff about a week ago but still suffering although I did have four good days without any headache. I read a blog from someone last night that this can take up two months to rid your body of this poison. I also have realized I am gluten intolerante any wheat pasta throws me to a major migraine. I feel terrible today and don't know if my body is detoxing and that is why? I have dumped everthing on the list of offenders. Any encouragment please would be helpful. It just so comforting to know there are others with this problem and I am not alone. My family has a hard time understanding since they do not suffer these severe symptoms.

Hi Sandy, I hope you're feeling a little better. I don't have the migraines like you do, but I was eating protein bars and protein powder on a regular basis thinking I was eating pretty healthy. Once you really look hard into everything it's mind-boggling how much 'hidden msg' is out there. I completely agree, it's very discouraging at times to struggle with this.
Good luck with your sleuthing. I'm relatively new to this as well and I frequently have to go back to the test diet (and re-start that neglected food journal) to figure out what I ate that I'm reacting to.

Lee thanks for the response, I was totally blinded by the stuff in the heathfood store. I still purchase from them but I am very carefull. I know now keep it simple just whole foods. I have had two days without a headache which is a miracle. I had three days after a week of no msg with terrible body aches which I believe my body was dextoxing. I am trying to go off caffine as well which is the hardest for me even though I don't drink more than on cup. If I look back in my life I remember having terrible migraines in my twenties due to crystal light. I am now in my fifies you think I would have made the connection but I had so many people telling me different things, different diet's it all really makes sense now.

Ok things are getting better I am not waking up with pressure behind my eyes anymore. I am still getting headaches on rt eye which I was dignosed coming from neck pain. Not severe. However not getting migraines. Progess is being made. I have been very strick on no msg, only eating at home.

No nausea anymore used to have to drink tons of ginger tea and carry ginger candy in my purse. No more anxiety no more depression. Realize I am reacting to sulfites as well. I read fish is sulfited does anyone know about this I really like fish now afraid to eat it.

I think the ice they use on fish is full of sulfites.

Hi Sandy & Sara,
I'm glad you're better Sandy, that's huge. I've heard that about ice for fish as well, but I don't know for sure.
I've done well with some flash-frozen wild organic fish at the grocery store. (No seasonings, battered, cut up pieces, stuffed, marinated or anything heat-to-serve.) And I found some canned tuna without broth. But everyone is different. I hope you can find some you can eat.

Once I get a few months of feeling better I think I will try that flash frozen fish. I am trying to get as many non headaches days as possible and the longer I go without MSG I am seeing improvement. Started on a powder pro-biotic that is unflavored as I read over the counter meds (which I took alot of) can cause leaky gut and its needs to heal because it makes your more reactive. Its so nice to hear from others on this board to know your not the only person who has these issues.

Hi, I have been following a no-msg diet for 9 years now and there is a lot to learn about what is safe and what is not. I read and reread Deb's book and kept a daily log of what I ate before I really began to understand all the culprits for me. What I came to figure out is to avoid anything that man made, eat fresh (organic if possible) everything. Healthy eating to you all.

Hi from the UK everyone, I'm a long-time MSG avoider due to migraines and a long-time lurker on this site but this is my first post....Im looking for a coffee alternative and have read articles recommending chicory as a healthy coffee alternative. However I can't find any info on its glutamate content. Has anyone tried organic instant chicory drink? Its made with 100% organic roasted chicory root. Also, has anyone experienced hair loss as an MSH symptom? I have a friend who feels extremely lethargic after eating most foods and her hair is falling out. She is ok after eating my home made whole food soup tho. I have recommended to try the test diet on this website and to change to safer personal care products. Thanks everyone.

Thats very interesting Roy thanks! The reason is that there is osteporosis in my family (my mum) and coffee is acidifying. However I also read that chicory can offset those acidifying effects so it is feasible to drink a mix of both chicory and coffee - that way I could still get the protective benefits of the coffee, and chicory root is a good prebiotic. Im always wary of trying something new though as it can set off a migraine, which is never nice.

Sandy, sound like we have similar symptoms, ie migraines and body aches. I also get extreme lethargy. It definitely does get better the longer you stay off MSG. I eat very little food from a packet, I find even if the label seems 'clean' I still get ill. Fresh whole foods are definitely the way to go.

I react immediately to msg family
love coffee !!!!!!!!!!!
can drink folgers classic roast medium
and most organic
drip coffee maker only
the cheaper old style filters seem to work for me
cannot use single dose stuff
veggies I scrub and rinse everything with Dawn blue dish soap. react to oils/spray
Earthbound Farms lettuce works
react to organic girl/others because of new wash
have to eat organic potatoes (react to gas?)

Shelli I have tried the chickory coffee and do not like it. I don't seem to have a problem with coffee if I keep it to one to two cups in the am.I stoped messing with my am coffee because I will get a bad headache if I don't have it. If you eat lots of greens that helps with your PH.What is so frustrating is I have to travel some with my job. Eating out is a nightmare they either don't cook with real butter or use vegtable oil. All the meat including chicken is pre-marinated. I ended up with dry fish and brocolli twice. I much rather eat at home my food is good. I think I need to start taking my dinner with me and eating in the hotel. Does any body have lunch suggestions that is the hardest for me. I think its going to be Nutri Bullett on days I don't have time to cook. Went to pain managment physician had some trigger point injecitons helped alot. It's hard for anyone to beleive pain in your body is caused by food. I don't know why if you don't put the right fuel in your car it will break down or run bad Amen!
