At the age of thirteen I had a feeling of being pulled out of reality. It was like all of the sudden I was watching life on TV. I was distant and inside myself. It is hard to describe. Heavy brain fog? No one has ever said they understand this yet. Doctors look at me like I am crazy.
At 16 I had a migraine so bad I had to go to the hospital. No diagnosis. Years later I had a herniated disk (C3) in my neck operated on. Doctor said it would take care of the headaches. The first visit back after the operation I was is severe pain with a migraine. He looked at my face and said, oh no that is a sinus headache. I know a doctor in St. Helena that can help you with that. I was furious! ! ! I never went to the other doctor. He didnít take insurance and I knew it was just another dead end and lots of $$. The migraines have subsided after menopause. Still have lots of headaches and am grateful they are not migraines.
I have wasted thousands of dollars on operations, doctors and pills and only continue to get worse.
When I first sobered up 25 years ago I was a health nut. I was a pollo-lacto-vegetarian and exercised a great deal. I even gave up caffeine and soft drinks. I ate at home most of the time. I felt healthy Ė physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually (lots of AA meetings). Then I went to a job interview 1 Ĺ hours from home and bought a diet Coke for the ride (stupid). I felt pretty excited and started drinking diet Coke daily from that time. The job was working in a winery in the middle of vineyards. They put LOTS of sulfites on grapes and in the wine. 1 Ĺ years later I had my thyroid removed because of a goiter. Doctors told me remove it or die. My mother had hers removed when I was in kindergarten so I thought it was just genes. I had gone back to eating the Standard American Diet (SAD appropriate initials!) when I had my daughter because everyone around me was telling me it would be better for us. I donít know anyone who ate healthy. Still donít. I did go back and forth between vegetarian whole foods and the SAD while raising my youngest. My baby is 22 now and has a very painful degenerative disk in her back. Both of my girls do. MSG relation?
Twelve years ago I went into my own business to be home for my daughter and also because I didnít think I could get another job. I was tired, brain fog, forgetful and frightened I was losing my mind. Over the years things have gradually gotten worse. I thought it must be menopause. I just closed my business doors December of 2008 because I can no longer concentrate for long and I was forgetting things I have known for 20 years. I am not able to provide my clients with the service they need. I am now unhealthy, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. I am single and grateful that I am living with my father for now but I want my life back! ! !
I was on anti-depressants for about 17 years. I stopped them in September 2008 them with my doctors help but she wasnít happy with me. I was going to check into ADD drugs thinking I was more ADD than just depressed. And people told me the ADD drugs were uppers. Iím a recovering drug addict as well. Then I found MSGmyth! I have almost all of the symptoms and some I see in the posts too. I have been on the Test Yourself diet for one week now. I am not perfect on it but I write down how I feel in the morning, what I eat, my symptoms bad and good, thoughts, emotions and exercise. I am listening to my body and have pinpointed a few things already. I feel a bit better each day. Iím afraid to hope for full recovery because I have been disappointed for so many years now. I received Debís book yesterday and was happy to read things I COULD have instead of all I couldnít have. I am using my AA principles to help me with MSG, caffeine and sulfite elimination and the posts as my meetings/support group. One day at a time!
There is more I want to say but I will do that a post at a time. I am very grateful for your website and everyone who posts and answers back. Now I know people who are like me and I am not alone! Thank you all!

We are glad you are here. We've all been there.
Your post reminded me of this fairly new video everyone should see. I don't think anyone posted about it before. It definitely will give you some incite into our whole medical system.

Thanks for your response Bill. I watched all 10 parts. I am not surprised that is happening but I'm glad to see the video on the internet. I am glad I will not be participating anymore. I am grateful I am not more screwed up after so many years on anti-depressants.
I plan on continuing the MSG elimination diet, my journal and reading these posts. I am taking care of myself. I really can't trust anyone else with my welfare accept me. I feel like I am having a personal breakthrough. Leaving the state of denial and believing, trusting in myself again.
I love this site because I read "this is what happened to me" and "this is what works for me". We are all different and there is a genuine caring and sharing going on. Reading helps and so does posting.
Today was a good day! I'm going to read Deb's book now.

You gotta be careful about AA. Here is a website that kicks the
xxxx stuffings out of AA.
And you gotta be careful about doctors. There are 2 categories of people that doctors can't make money out of: healthy people and dead people. So from the point of view of making money, they don't want you to be healthy and they don't want you to be dead. They want you to live as long as possible but in a state of sickness. Essentially what they do is they make money out of you by torturing you. That's the truth. I'm not exaggerating.
A few doctors are actually interested in people's health and their patients actually get well. These doctors are called 'quacks' and they are put down by force of law. And it's a d... good thing too, because there is no way normal doctors could successfully compete against these quacks in a free market.

Welcome to this wonderful discussion board. From your posts you sound like a very wise person who may have gone off-track a couple of times, but has the will and determination to get back on-track again. This website has been a saviour to many, me included. Most, if not all, of us have had bad experiences with doctors - they either think we are crazy and/or misdiagnosis us and treat us accordingly. I am positive you can feel better and gain your health back. I remember as a young adult hearing the old saying "You are what you eat". I didn't get the full meaning until recent years. Even though there are more and more products and food stuffs (I call them that because they aren't really even food) containing toxins, it is possible to eat really good, whole foods. Boy, what a difference it makes....well, I don't have to tell you that, as you were a 'health nut' at one point.
Even though everyone is different, has different symptoms and sensitivity levels, we here have one thing in common, and are here for each other. Post again and often to let us know how you are doing.

Thanks so much for sharing your sincere stories here, everyone. They serve to help others searching for answers. We have just put a link from our site's homepage to this topic and one other. Hope they will inform and inspire. They sure do those things for me.

Thank you all for your reply's! Every day I am a bit better. It is difficult cleaning out the kitchen because I live with my father and the kitchen isn't mine. I have stood my ground with my food choices though and he knows I am serious now. That is a big step for me.
Deb's book has answered a lot of questions. It put all this into easy to read and understand language. That is a really good thing for me since my brain doesn't comprehend much at one time right now.
I did read the section on Sulfites, thank you. I have not had a reaction to sulfa drugs that I remember but I haven't used them in awhile. My baby formula was corn syrup and condensed milk which are both on the sulfite list. I am trying to test sulfites as well.
Today is a better day!

The corn syrup and condensed milk formula was used for years before commercially made baby formulas. I still remember my mother making it for my siblings.
