"Growing dependence on prepackaged meals increases exposure to foods and additives that may cause reactions." Source: http://www.hearnet.com/features/articles/artist_article_0797hhmag.shtml
Nothing new to us folks but at least it appears the source of the problem is getting more recognition.

I just wanted to thank all the folks on this site who have helped me so much. The info about digestive tract health and leaky gut in particular is something I doubt I would have investigated if it hadn't been brought up here. I have been drinking more water every day, and have been occasionally eating safe yogurt (even though I have dairy allergy). I have been trying to recover from all the antibiotics I have been subjected to in the past few years, and my stomach is no longer in constant agony, and I can tolerate my food allergens much better now. I actually had a wheat bagel the other day! I am feeling better each day, and I really want to thank you for that:)

Hi all
I haven't been on this site for about two weeks now and would like to pass on some information about our experiences with ablation and atrial fibrillation ( for those that aren't interested just scroll on down as this will take me a little while ). The last time I was here we (hubby and I) were stuck with the decision as to whether ablate for his a-fibs or not. At that time it appeared that the nomsg diet was helping a great deal but was not a "for sure" thing ( but then, what ever is ?) Suzanne, you had put it nicely that maybe it would be best to fence in the area and not fall off the cliff and hope the ablation thing would work. You put it very nicely and I thought a great deal about that.

As my husband could not tolerate any meds - but was in otherwise excellent condition. - in the end we did go for the ablation on the 29th. As you said, Suzanne, there are lots of doctors that are electing to advertise about this procedure. We did a great deal of homework and went to the best in the U.S. In fact this Dr. Jackman in Oklahoma City actually did the son of the sheik of Biran.

The procedure took 12 hours. Catheters were inserted in the two groin areas - then a "snake" of some kind was snaked through the vein to the right side of the heart. The heart was pierced and the catheter went through to the septum and pierced that. There are four main veins that feed into the left atrium which usually ( altho not always ) is the cause of the a-fib to occur. One of more of those veins starts jerking and thus causes the a-fib. { before the procedure we had a conference with the doctor and said that we thought eating msg had a great affect on causing the problem to start - the vein to jerk around} Well, he gave me "that look" then said he never had heard of that ( actually that I was probably out of my mind, but never mind ) . . . . . Anyway, in Jim's case there were two of the four veins that were causing the problem. Radio waves were sent along this "snake" and the spots were zapped. A-fib did not occur again there when they induced it. Then all the stuff was taken out again. It appears that it was a success but we have to go six weeks without an a-fib before they can say "successful".

Interestingly - we did get an IV infection right after leaving the hospital and returned to emergency to have that taken care of. While there I talked to the admitting gal, and mentioned that Jim got a reaction to msg ( had to go on the admitting papers ). She then related that just a few days before she and some of the emergency staff were taking their lunch break when one of the gals starting losing her breath and couldn't breath. (at least she was in the right place for that to have happened ) - surprise, she had been eating chinese - that was the first time that she had gotten a reaction. The admitting gal then also told me that she would get terrible headaches if she ate chinese (surprise of surprises, right?) I told her the msg thingy - she kinda listened - but at the same time I am not sure that she "heard". We have all been there, right? . . . . . At any rate, all is well here and it appears we made the right decision but believe me, we will continue on a very strict msg diet because we KNOW that was either THE or one of the contributing factors of the whole thing. . . . . .Have a great day and Deb this is the most wonderful site - and you have the most wonderful cookbook out - and trying your relleno bake tonight.

I am still reacting to MSG and other additives but the severity of my reactions has lessened greatly and my energy is coming back more and more! My stomach and digestive system is so much more settled too. Whoopee!!! (I am still staying away from MSG and additives but sometimes I do goof.) Anyway, I am totally amazed and still owe this to my taking the following probiotic for the past 3 weeks: Flora Biotic 16 (16 strains of lactobacilius and bifidus) --- Made by "Needs" --- must be refrigerated. (Phone: 1-800-634-1380). My biochemist is keeping me 2 per day which I take them every morning upon wakening and do not eat for around one hour. To be safe, I remove the contents from the capsule. If anyone is suffering with digestive problems or may go on antibiotics, read up on probiotics. The Harvard Medical Letter (March 2002) has an excellent article on them.

I was also directed by my biochemist to squeeze lime or lemon on all my food, reduce sugar intake (e.g., bananas, cake, cookies)and to continue to not eat any processed or fermented foods --- which I was already doing thanks to all that I learned here. I am drinking quite a bit of water with lemon too. (Dr. Batmanghelidj, MD has several books out on the importance of drinking water. He writes about the fact that we lose our thirst if we don't stay hydrated and that dehydration is the cause of many diseases.)

Pat - This is helpful info. Thank you. My aunt still doesn't have her sense of taste after being "poisoned" by Digoxin (digitalis) which she was taking for rapid heartbeat and she has been off this medication for a few weeks now!

Pat, Hope things turn out good with your husband's surgery. Unless there is another Suzanne writing here, (I haven't noticed one the last 3 or 4 weeks anyway)then unfortunately you attributed a couple quotes to me that I didn't make..I'm new here, just in the last 3 or 4 weeks. But, I'm glad whoever made the helpful comments made them!

Oh well - then thanks Carol H. The comments meant a great deal to me before we left to have the ablation done. I really appreciated the support. Got such a good check up today that they took my man off the small amount of BP medicine that he was on ( probably caused by all the meds they were trying to shove down his throat ) -- so things are looking up here.

Hi, My husband has been suffering from dizziness, hives and a feeling of constriction in his upper throat for about 1 year. He has been taking medication for high blood pressure, but the same symptoms remain when types of medication are changed. We thought he may have a food allergy because the symptoms are aggravated after he eats. Now I'm wondering if he may be allergic to MSG, or if MSG in conjunction with his medication may be the culprit... Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks, LM

Leslie, you are describing a classic MSG symptom that we hear time after time. In fact, when my father-in-law is eating out and gets too much MSG, his throat constricts so much that he has to run to the bathroom and induce vomiting. Dizziness and high blood pressure are both common symptoms of MSG toxicity. Please keep reading and learning all that you can and be aware that most doctors still think that MSG is a safe substance. You can do a keyword search at the left here, on any topic you have asked about for more information from our archives. There have been many discussions on the symptoms you have mentioned.

Below is an article linking the elimination of additives from the diet with relief from asthma.

What many people don't know is that by eliminating the junk food like the McDonald's hamburger mentioned in the article, they are basically decreasing the amount of MSG...which is considered an asthma trigger by the FDA...that's basically all they recognize about MSG. Too bad the article just mentions preservatives and additives generally.

The article linked below specifically mentions MSG as an asthma trigger:

1.Has anyone here had experience with pancreatic enzymes? I'm afraid to try them right now. As you know, I try to avoid most supplements, medications, processed foods and certainly MSG. Instead I eat a WIDE variety of fresh food. But the pancreatic enzymes and avoidance of saturated fat was recommended by a MD to help with the start of a fat malabsorption problem. They are made out of porcine (pork) which spooks me further.
2. I am not recommending that anyone run out and trying pancreatic enzymes but has anyone heard of personal experiences with them for help with allergies or food sensitivies? Here is reference I found: http://bastyrcenter.org/content/view/317/

I am very interested in the links to msg and asthma. I have been suffering severe breathlessness, especially on exersion. I have found occasionally like today that I am clear but it recurs about10 mins after eating (I only had some Granary bread toast and butter) and I am really having breathing problems.

The links are dead, any more anyone please?

Thanks
Dawn
